A Delayed Arrival at Spring Training for Marcus Stroman

The New York Yankees have found themselves in a curious situation as spring training gets underway. Right-hander Marcus Stroman, a key player and a subject of trade rumors for much of the offseason, has yet to show up for the team’s workouts. Pitchers and catchers reported to camp two days ago, but Stroman’s absence has drawn attention and speculation.

Understanding the Delay

SNY MLB Insider Andy Martino provides some clarity on the matter, reporting that Stroman has already completed his spring training physical and is simply taking a few extra days. Martino emphasizes that this is not a holdout or a long-term absence. The full expectation is that Stroman will be joining his teammates within the next few days. Manager Aaron Boone acknowledged the situation, stating that he had spoken with Stroman and knew he "might be out the first couple of days." Boone added that such delays can happen under the MLB Collective Bargaining Agreement, which sets a mandatory reporting date of 33 days before the season starts.

Boone’s Perspective

Boone was candid about the situation, recognizing the additional noise surrounding Stroman due to the trade rumors. "I certainly get how it all looks with all the noise around it this winter," he said. "But the reality is this is something under CBA terms. I certainly understand the look around it and obviously the story around it. But I’ve even had communication with him [Wednesday] night and this morning that he is ready to go mentally and physically and hopefully be here in the next couple of days."

The Awkward Position

Stroman, who signed a two-year deal last offseason with a vesting option for 2026, finds himself in an awkward position within the Yankees’ rotation. The team has a formidable starting lineup, including Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil, Carlos Rodon, and Clarke Schmidt. This has been further strengthened by the recent signing of Max Fried to an eight-year deal. Boone admitted to the peculiarity of the situation, noting that Stroman is a proud player with a strong career. "It’s a little bit of an awkward situation, obviously. Of course, I want him here. Trying to keep nudging him to get here."

Stroman’s 2022 Performance

Last year, during his first season with the Yankees, Stroman had a 4.31 ERA (4.62 FIP) and a 1.46 WHIP, striking out 113 batters in 154.2 innings over 30 games (29 starts). While these numbers are respectable, they did not secure him a spot in the Yankees’ postseason roster. Stroman was included on the ALCS roster but did not appear in any games. He was notably left off the roster for the ALDS and the World Series, highlighting the team’s deep and competitive pitching staff.

The Future for Stroman

With the Yankees’ rotation looking increasingly crowded, Stroman’s future with the team is uncertain. If the Yankees suffer no significant injuries, he may find himself in the bullpen or, alternatively, on another team. Stroman’s option for 2026 will vest only if he throws at least 140 innings this season. Given the current landscape, this requirement adds another layer of complexity to his situation.

As spring training progresses, all eyes will be on Stroman’s return and how the Yankees plan to integrate him into their pitching strategy. For now, the team remains focused on respecting the rules and ensuring that Stroman’s eventual return is as seamless as possible.
