A Stellar Start to Spring Training
Paul Skenes made a promising return to the mound in his 2025 spring training debut, demonstrating the dominance that earned him the National League Rookie of the Year award last season. Pitching for the Pittsburgh Pirates in a 5-2 win against the Baltimore Orioles, Skenes struck out four batters in three innings. Despite allowing one run on four hits, he threw 33 of his 54 pitches for strikes and consistently hit 99 mph on the radar gun. This performance was a strong indicator of his continued growth and the high expectations for the upcoming season.
Expanding the Arsenal
One of the most notable aspects of Skenes’ debut was the introduction of two new pitches: a cutter and a sinker. These additions to his repertoire are part of his ongoing development as a pitcher. "When you’re working on new stuff, you’re trying to figure out how it will affect each other," Skenes told reporters. "So, I’m focused on getting it in the zone and seeing where we’re at.” The goal is to refine these new pitches and integrate them seamlessly into his pitching strategy. This expansion of his arsenal is a strategic move that could further solidify his status as a top pitcher.
Adjusting to a Fuller Spring Training Schedule
Skenes was originally scheduled to make his spring debut on Monday against the Philadelphia Phillies, but rain forced the game’s cancellation. This setback, however, did not deter his preparation. Pitching three innings in his debut was a significant step, indicating a larger pitch count and the potential to throw deeper into games. As Pirates manager Derek Shelton noted, "We’re in a little different spot than we were last year. Last year, we were monitoring the volume, not only in spring training, but as we got into the season. This year, we know he’s a guy who is in our rotation, so I think you’ll see him work on the variety of pitches."
Efficiency and New Challenges
Skenes acknowledged that pitching efficiently remains one of his primary goals for the season. Throwing 23 pitches in the first inning, he admitted, was not the most efficient start. "If you come out of the game with 23 pitches, that means you were throwing it in the zone and you were getting outs with it," he explained. "I wasn’t doing that super efficiently today. That’s kind of the one thing I’d say to that. That stuff will happen. Weak contact found holes and with some of those new pitches, it just kind of is what it is a little bit." This self-awareness and willingness to learn and adapt are crucial qualities for a pitcher of his caliber.
Establishing Himself as an Ace
Last season, Skenes’ performance was nothing short of spectacular. He finished with a 1.96 ERA, 170 strikeouts in 133 innings, and an 11-3 record in 23 starts, quickly establishing himself as a top pitcher. Drafted as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, Skenes was called up by the Pirates in June after an impressive start in Triple-A Indianapolis. His rapid ascent to the major leagues and subsequent success has set a high bar for his career. The Pirates and their fans are eagerly anticipating what he can achieve this season, especially with the added tools in his pitching arsenal.
Looking Forward to the 2025 Season
As the Pirates prepare for the 2025 season, Skenes’ performance in spring training is a promising sign. His ability to adapt and refine his skills, coupled with his natural talent, positions him as a key player in the team’s rotation. Manager Derek Shelton’s confidence in Skenes’ development and the team’s overall strategy suggest that the Pirates are well-prepared for the challenges ahead. Skenes’ journey from a highly touted draft pick to a dominant rookie and now an established ace is a testament to his hard work and dedication. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how he continues to evolve and lead the Pirates in the upcoming season.
