Max Fried’s Impressive First Live BP

The Yankees’ spring training continued its steady pace in Tampa on Saturday, with manager Aaron Boone taking time to speak with the media about several noteworthy developments. One of the most significant highlights of the day was Max Fried’s first live batting practice session. The Yankees’ marquee acquisition from the Braves, Fried, demonstrated an impressive display of focus and competitive spirit, which Boone found particularly encouraging.

"He’s got such a large arsenal," Boone said, elaborating on Fried’s pitching abilities. "Watching him as a hitter, it’s the mix of pitches and movement. That fastball that cuts naturally, he’s got a sinker and can work both sides of the plate with it. He’s got a full arsenal and the ability to, on the fly, be able to move his hand a certain way on the ball. It’s been fun to see it up close." Fried’s performance bodes well for the Yankees, as they aim to bolster their already formidable rotation led by Gerrit Cole. His elite weak-contact arsenal and overall pitch variety are expected to be significant assets during the upcoming season.

Boone’s Criteria for a Backup Catcher

With the spring training roster taking shape, the competition for the backup catcher position to Austin Wells is heating up. Several catchers, both seasoned and newcomers, were invited to Yankees camp, and Boone provided insights into what he’s looking for in the ideal No. 2 catcher.

"I think there’s a few guys who are capable of grabbing [the spot]," Boone explained. "I’m excited for the next wave of catchers that are jumping off the page this spring in the [live BPs]. They all bring something to the table, have different strengths, weaknesses, and we’ll just let that play out for the next six weeks and it may go on beyond that, honestly." Boone emphasized the importance of how these catchers connect with the rest of the team and the pitchers, how they cover their weaknesses, and their overall contribution to the clubhouse dynamics. While major league experience is a plus, it’s not the only factor in the decision-making process. Candidates such as Alex Jackson, Rafael Flores, Omar Martinez, and Ronaldo Hernandez, among others, will have ample opportunities to showcase their skills and make a strong case for the role.

Yerry de los Santos: A Bullpen Prospect to Watch

Another area of the Yankees’ roster that remains fluid is the bullpen, where Jake Cousins’ injury may create openings for new talent. Among the non-roster invitees, Yerry de los Santos has caught Boone’s eye with his performance in spring training. De los Santos threw his first live BP on Saturday, and Boone was clearly impressed by what he saw.

"I like what I’m seeing, without question. There’s a lot of interesting guys that can factor in this year," Boone remarked. "De Los Santos who went today was really good. Was sharp. Made some real improvements in the last few months of Triple-A. Locked in some pitches. Today, I thought his sinker, slider, and split were all good pitches for him. Commanded how he wanted to." After a challenging start to his minor league season, de los Santos showed significant improvement, posting a 2.89 ERA in both August and September with four saves in 17 appearances. If he can maintain this level of performance throughout the spring, the 27-year-old might just secure a spot on the Opening Day roster, adding depth and versatility to the Yankees’ bullpen.

Boone’s Optimism and Focus

As the Yankees prepare for the upcoming season, Boone’s comments reflect a blend of optimism and pragmatism. The team’s acquisitions and internal development have created a competitive and dynamic environment in spring training, which Boone believes will benefit the Yankees in the long run.

"The competition is fierce, and that’s what we want," Boone stated. "It pushes everyone to be their best, and it creates a positive and focused training atmosphere. We have a lot of talented players, and the goal is to field the best possible team come Opening Day." Boone’s approach underscores the Yankees’ commitment to excellence and their willingness to embrace competition to achieve their goals. The manager’s focus on player development and team chemistry is a testament to the organization’s holistic approach to building a winning team.

Spring Training as a Crucial Testing Ground

Spring training serves as a vital testing ground for both established and emerging Yankees players. For veterans, it’s an opportunity to refine their skills and build cohesion with their teammates. For younger players and non-roster invitees, it’s a chance to make a lasting impression and earn a place on the roster.

"Spring training is all about finding the right fit," Boone noted. "We have a mix of experienced players and promising young talent, and we need to see how they all mesh together. It’s a time for players to show what they can do, and for us, it’s about making the best decisions to put us in the best position to win games." The Yankees’ spring training program is designed to be comprehensive, with a focus on physical conditioning, mental preparation, and tactical development. The team’s investment in player development is evident in the attention to detail and the supportive environment they create for their players.

Looking Ahead to the Regular Season

As spring training progresses, the Yankees are increasingly focused on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the regular season. The team’s strength in depth, particularly in the pitching department, positions them well for a competitive season. Boone’s leadership and the players’ dedication are key factors in the Yankees’ quest for success.

"We have a lot of work to do, but I’m confident in the talent and the character of this team," Boone concluded. "We’re going to take it one day at a time, stay focused, and do everything we can to bring a championship back to the Bronx." The Yankees’ spring training serves as a foundation for their journey toward the 2025 season, and the early signs are promising. With a blend of experienced veterans and emerging stars, the team is poised to make a strong impact in the coming months.
