The Long and Winding Road to the Starting Lineup
SAN FRRANCISCO – The journey from the far end of the Warriors’ bench to the starting lineup is a mere 15 feet in distance. For Moses Moody, this journey, fraught with uncertainty and inconsistency, took more than three years. Selected as the 14th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, Moody’s minutes in the first three seasons were as unpredictable as a rainbow. His playing time fluctuated, and he often found himself on the bench, a spectator in his own career. Despite his talent and potential, he struggled to find a consistent role, a scenario that resonated deeply with many in Dub Nation who have been advocating for more playing time for the young forward.
A Turning Point and a New Role
Now, Moody has finally found his footing as a starter, and he’s making a compelling case to stay there. In just two starts, he’s averaging 16 points on 12-of-20 shooting from the field, including 6-of-12 from beyond the arc. His performances have been nothing short of impressive, especially in the eight games he has started this season, all of which the Warriors have won. However, it’s not just the wins that have solidified his position; it’s his consistent performance and fit within the team’s dynamic.
Coaching Confidence and Team Chemistry
Coach Steve Kerr has been a significant factor in Moody’s recent success. "Just the confidence that’s coming from consistent playing time and minutes," Kerr said late Friday night. "And he’s a good fit playing next to BP, Steph, and Jimmy. Those guys are all playmakers, with Draymond. And he can play the role that I think he’s most comfortable in, which is space the floor, let it fly when he’s open, play hard and compete." The addition of Jimmy Butler to the starting lineup has also been a boon, with Moody and the team thriving under this new dynamic. Moody’s ability to spread the floor and defend multiple positions makes him a versatile asset in Kerr’s system, complementing the interior play of Butler and Green.
Personal Growth and Overcoming Adversity
Moody’s journey to the starting lineup has been marked by resilience and adaptability. "I’ve been in some hard situations my first couple years in the league where it’s like playing, you might come out and coach would tell me that I’m not doing anything wrong. It’s nothing to do with me," Moody shared after a recent practice. "But I’m playing 15 minutes a game, get in for that long and miss two shots and that’s all you get. Not complaining about the situation, because it has been what it is. It’s not anybody’s fault. With the lineups and teams that we had, there wasn’t much opportunity on the floor and I just kind of have to deal with it." Despite the challenges, Moody has remained focused, using his consistent playing time to showcase his skills and find a groove in his role.
Shining Moments and Future Prospects
One of Moody’s most standout performances came on Friday in Sacramento, where he scored 22 points, tying Buddy Hield for the team high. Both players were efficient, shooting 8-of-11 from the field, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. Such performances highlight what Moody is capable of when given the opportunity to play with confidence. "The player that I’ve been able to be (lately) is the player that I am," Moody said. "Just being able to have more time to showcase that and get a groove and fall into that role, that’s been fun. Being able to play basketball the way I always have." At 6-foot-5, Moody may be shorter than the typical NBA power forward, but in the context of Golden State’s starting lineup, his height is irrelevant. His focus is on continuing to contribute and solidify his position.
A Bright Future for the Warriors
Moody’s emergence as a reliable starter is a testament to his perseverance and the Warriors’ ability to develop talent. With a core of established stars like Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Jimmy Butler, Moody’s role as a versatile and efficient wing is crucial to the team’s success. As the Warriors continue to navigate the season, Moody’s consistent play and strong performances will be key to maintaining their position at the top of the standings. For Moody, the journey from the bench to the starting lineup is just the beginning, and he is determined to make the most of his opportunity.
