First Impressions in Kuttenberg
When you first set foot in Kuttenberg, the bustling medieval city in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, the entire region can seem overwhelming. The streets are filled with colorful characters, each with their own stories and quirks. Among these unique individuals, one stands out: Menhard, a man you encounter near the north side of the city. Menhard is distinct for his unconventional teaching methods; he swings a sword around, challenging passersby to a duel. This unusual encounter marks the beginning of the Ars Dimicatoria quest, a series of tasks that will not only test your combat skills but also delve into the intricacies of medieval guild politics.
The Duel with Menhard
After you exhaust the dialogue options with Menhard, he proposes a challenge: a duel to prove who the better swordsman is. To participate, you must put up 200 Groschen. The duel is conducted using blunt blades, ensuring that the combat is more about skill than lethality. No armor is allowed, putting both of you on an equal footing. However, the duel is interrupted by a cutscene featuring the Kuttenberg swordsman brotherhood. They accuse Menhard of not having their blessing to teach swordsmanship or conduct duels in the street. As a result, you both pay a fine and are banished from the city. Menhard, not one to give up easily, suggests a meeting outside the city walls at the Oak Wagoner’s Inn, setting the stage for the next phase of your adventure.
Meeting Menhard at the Oak Inn
Upon arriving at the Oak Wagoner’s Inn, Menhard confides in you about his predicament. Due to the ongoing war, his charter has been rejected by the swordfighting brotherhood, and they have barred him from teaching in Kuttenberg. Menhard, ever the schemer, asks for your assistance in a less honorable way. He wants to steal a sword from the brotherhood, an act that will force them to challenge him officially. This plan, while dubious, is his way of gaining recognition and respect. If you agree to help him, he will guide you to the guildhall, a structure located on the southwest side of the town, adjacent to the bathhouse.
The Heist at the Guildhall
Stealing the guild’s sword is no small feat. You must navigate the back alleys of Kuttenberg to find a suitable entrance to the guildhall. There are two options: one door is readily open but patrolled by more guards, while the other requires you to pick a lock but has fewer obstacles. Once inside, you’ll need to make your way to the second floor, where the guild sword is displayed. A housewife regularly patrols the halls, and if she catches you, she will ask you to leave. High persuasion skills might help you avoid a penalty, but it’s best to avoid her altogether. The sword is hung on the wall in the large hall on the second floor, alongside other weapons. Fetch it carefully, ensuring no one sees you, and prepare for the next step.
The Town Hall Heist
The next challenge is to hang the stolen sword in the rafters of the town hall. This part of the quest is equally tricky, as the town hall is a central location, bustling with activity during the day. To maximize your chances of success, wait until nightfall. Crafting a Nighthawk potion can enhance your night vision, making it easier to navigate the darkened corridors. Avoid anyone who might recognize you, especially the guards and town officials. Place the guild longsword in the rafters without being detected. Once this is done, you must wait until sunrise before speaking with Menhard again. He will be thrilled to proceed with the challenge against the sword fighting guild.
The Final Showdown
With the sword in place, the swordfighting brotherhood is forced to accept Menhard’s challenge. However, if you were caught during your theft, the guild will have a slight advantage. They will be allowed to wear light armor, while you must fight in clothing. While this is not a significant edge, it could make the difference in a close match. The tournament against the brotherhood is the climax of the quest. You must defeat your opponent twice to win, which can be demanding but rewarding. Once victorious, Menhard rewards you for your efforts, and you can finally receive the training you sought. This quest not only enhances your combat skills but also provides a deep insight into the complex social dynamics of medieval life, where honor and cunning often go hand in hand.
