The Winklevoss Twins: From Tech Moguls to Football Co-Owners
Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, the billionaire twins best known for their involvement in the early days of Facebook, have officially become co-owners of Real Bedford, an English non-league football club. The American tech moguls have finalized a £3.5 million investment, taking a 45% stake in the eighth-tier outfit. This significant investment comes after a deal in principle was announced in April 2024, following their sponsorship of the club through Gemini, their cryptocurrency exchange, which began in January 2022.
A Journey from Harvard to Hollywood and Beyond
The Winklevoss twins gained widespread recognition after their portrayal in the Oscar-winning film "The Social Network," where Armie Hammer played the roles of both brothers. In 2004, they sued Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta (formerly Facebook), alleging that he had stolen their idea for a social networking platform while they were classmates at Harvard University. Although their lawsuit was initially dismissed, they were later awarded a substantial settlement. Since then, the brothers have ventured into the world of cryptocurrency, founding the Gemini exchange, and have amassed a net worth of £2.14 billion.
A New Chapter for Real Bedford
Peter McCormack, the chairman and owner of Real Bedford, welcomes the Winklevoss twins with open arms. After purchasing the club, then known as Bedford FC and situated in the 10th tier, in January 2022, McCormack has been instrumental in its growth. He emphasizes the significance of the twins’ involvement, stating, "The fact the Winklevoss twins are now co-owners is massive. They want to be involved in the running of the club, and I will handle the day-to-day business, but we will be speaking regularly." The investment will be primarily used to develop a training center, launch a talent academy, and support youth football, aiming to propel the club to higher tiers in English football.
The Appeal of English Football to Investors
Rob Hepburn, a corporate lawyer who advised the Winklevoss brothers on this investment, highlights the broader trend of big money flowing into lower-tier English football. "It’s a really exciting time for the lower leagues of football in England. We’ve seen the success that Salford City and Wrexham have had with significant injections of cash, and Real Bedford looks set to continue this trend," he told Sky Sports. The deal underscores the appeal of English football to investors, especially when there is a media angle or a compelling story behind the club.
Diverse Interests and Accomplishments
Beyond their business ventures, the Winklevoss twins have a diverse range of interests and accomplishments. They competed for the USA in the men’s pair rowing event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, demonstrating their commitment to sports and athleticism. Their multifaceted careers and public profiles bring significant media attention to Real Bedford, which currently attracts an average of only 300 spectators per game. The club’s recent success, including back-to-back promotions and a top position in the Southern League Division One Central, provides a solid foundation for their ambitious goals.
A Vision for the Future
The Winklevoss twins’ investment in Real Bedford is more than just a business venture; it represents a vision for the future of the club and the town of Bedford. While the goal of reaching the Premier League may seem ambitious, the twins are committed to using their resources and influence to help the club achieve its full potential. The club is currently in discussions to merge with Bedford Town, a seventh-tier side, which could further strengthen their position. With the Winklevoss brothers at the helm, Real Bedford is poised to make waves in the lower tiers of English football.
