Simone Inzaghi’s Future at Inter Milan:

Inter Milan’s Sporting Director, Piero Ausilio, has expressed his confidence in the long-term future of coach Simone Inzaghi at the club. Inzaghi’s current contract with the Nerazzurri is set to expire in June 2027, and Ausilio believes that the coach’s tenure could extend well beyond that, potentially for a decade. This optimistic projection is based on the mutual respect and satisfaction between Inzaghi and the club. Ausilio highlighted that Inter’s approach to contract extensions, such as the one-year extension given after winning the Scudetto, helps maintain a high level of focus and drive. However, he also emphasized that regular evaluations are crucial and necessary for continuous improvement. “What’s certain is that we’re very happy with him,” Ausilio stated, adding that Inzaghi is the best coach for Inter and shares a strong bond with the club.

Evaluating Davide Frattesi and Mehdi Taremi:

Ausilio addressed the situations of midfielder Davide Frattesi and striker Mehdi Taremi, both of whom have faced challenges this season. Frattesi, who has been linked with a January exit due to limited playing time, was described by Ausilio as a player with high expectations, justified by his talent. Despite strong interest from Roma, Inter’s Sporting Director explained that the club has persuaded Frattesi to stay, emphasizing his importance to the team’s present and future. “Playing with us today means fighting on all fronts,” Ausilio stated, and he hopes for a long-term commitment from Frattesi. Regarding Taremi, whose goal-scoring form has been inconsistent since joining Inter, Ausilio acknowledged the difficulty players often face adapting to Italian football. He pointed out that Taremi’s contributions extend beyond just his goals, highlighting his work rate and team play. “Thinking about his performances, I’m convinced his numbers will improve,” Ausilio added, urging patience from fans and media alike.

Support from Oaktree and Transfer Market Strategy:

Reflecting on Inter’s various ownership changes, Ausilio noted the unique but stimulating environments each new owner has brought. Under the current ownership by Oaktree, the club has experienced a blend of continuity and innovation. “They presented themselves to us perfectly, with tact, delicacy, and respect for the structure they found here,” Ausilio said, pointing to the January signing of Amel Ben Sulayem as an example of their forward-thinking approach. Inter’s quiet January transfer window, according to Ausilio, was a result of both a lack of opportune market deals and the belief that the existing squad is well-balanced and complete. He explained that the club prefers a leaner team, which is easier to manage and maintain competitive tension.

Goalkeeping Depth and Josep Martinez:

Addressing the club’s goalkeeping situation, Ausilio expressed confidence in young Josep Martinez, who has been called upon to fill in for the injured Yann Sommer. Despite some critics questioning the initial signing of Martinez, Ausilio defended the choice, noting his proven record in Italian football. “We see him every day in training, and I’m convinced that he’ll replace Sommer perfectly,” Ausilio stated. The Sporting Director also mentioned the club’s existing depth, with two top goalkeepers in Sommer and Martinez, and the importance of maintaining competition in every position. “The important thing is to have competition in every position, including goalkeeper,” he reiterated.

Dismissing Transfer Rumours:

Inter came under speculation in January about potential moves for Marco Asensio and Joao Felix. Ausilio firmly dismissed these rumours, attributing them to the activities of agents. “When they have to get a move for a player, they make phone calls—lots of them,” he explained. Ausilio acknowledged the quality of players like Asensio and Joao Felix but stressed that Inter is content with its current squad. “We’ve always told everyone straight up that we’re fine the way we are,” he said, emphasizing the club’s philosophy of maintaining a competitive and balanced team. Ausilio also noted that the club would only consider new signings if it were necessary to replace departing players, adhering to their strategy of having two competitive options for each position.

Champions League and Serie A Priorities:

Finally, Ausilio was asked about Inter’s priorities in the ongoing season, particularly in the context of the Champions League and Serie A title race. He stressed that discussing priorities is premature and that the club aims to remain competitive in all competitions. “We play to try to win,” Ausilio emphasized, adding that being in contention for multiple trophies increases the chances of success. Following Inter’s recent loss to Juventus, the Sporting Director and club President Beppe Marotta used the opportunity to remind the team of their core principles and the need for composure. When questioned if he would prefer a Champions League win over a Serie A title, Ausilio candidly replied, “Yes, I’d sign for it, but only if you have the trophy there.” This response reflects the club’s ambition and the high value they place on European success.
