Chelsea’s Struggles Continue Against Brighton

Chelsea’s struggles in recent weeks were brought into sharp focus on Saturday night when they were eliminated from the FA Cup by Brighton at the Amex Stadium. Less than a week later, the blues suffered another blow, this time a demoralizing 3-0 defeat in the Premier League. These results highlight that despite the significant financial investments made by the club, Enzo Maresca’s squad still has significant weaknesses that need addressing.

Goalkeeper Woes Persist

Chelsea’s goalkeeper issues were once again on display when Filip Jorgensen took the gloves. While Jorgensen wasn’t entirely to blame for the three goals conceded, his performance did little to assuage the concerns of Chelsea fans. Particularly notable was Kaoru Mitoma’s stunning strike, which was a highlight of the match. The fans might be reconsidering their stance on Rob Sanchez, who, in comparison, doesn’t seem such a poor choice anymore. Jorgensen’s rating of 5 reflects his mixed performance, with the club likely to reassess their options in the goalkeeping department.

Defensive Struggles

The Chelsea defense had a particularly rough night. Levi Colwill, who was given a torrid time by Brighton’s attack, epitomized the team’s defensive woes. He lost possession under minimal pressure and failed to recover, a recurring issue that has cost the Blues in the past two matches. Colwill’s rating of 5 is a fair reflection of his performance, which included two instances where he directly contributed to goals. Trevoh Chalobah also struggled, flapping around when marking Mitoma for the opening goal. Marc Cucurella, tasked with marking the dynamic Yankuba Minteh, was often outpaced and was fully sat down by the Gambia winger for Brighton’s third goal, much to the delight of the home crowd. Both Chalobah and Cucurella earned a 5 for their efforts, highlighting the need for a more robust defensive lineup.

Mixed Midfield Performances

In midfield, Moises Caicedo stood out as one of Chelsea’s few bright spots. Despite the jeers and chants of "what a waste of money" from the crowd, Caicedo has been a consistent performer over the past six months and was arguably Maresca’s best player on the pitch. His substitution when the game was out of reach was a bit surprising, but perhaps it was a prudent decision to rest him. Enzo Fernandez, the Chelsea skipper, had a mixed performance. He came close to equalizing with a header that rose above Joel Veltman, but was ruled out for a foul in the build-up. Fernandez looked sluggish in other areas and earned a 6 for his efforts. Noni Madueke, who had little influence on the game, was substituted off after just 20 minutes due to a hamstring injury. This injury further depletes Chelsea’s forward options, as they are already without Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu. Adding to the forward line’s woes, Joao Felix has joined AC Milan on loan, and Mykhailo Mudryk is suspended for testing positive for a banned substance, leaving the team thin on attacking depth.

Struggles in Attack

Cole Palmer’s performance was a clear indicator of the team’s attacking struggles. He was visibly frustrated throughout both halves, often throwing his hands up in irritation at the lack of service from his teammates. Despite having a few opportunities, Palmer’s shot over the bar was a rare highlight, and Chelsea failed to register a single effort on target. His rating of 5 is fitting, reflecting his inability to make a meaningful impact. Pedro Neto’s purpose on the pitch was unclear, and while he showed some pace, he couldn’t beat Tariq Lamptey in a one-on-one situation. Neto’s rating of 5 underscores his limited effectiveness. Christopher Nkunku, who did little to impress, jogged around without much contribution. If Jackson were not also injured, the Blues might have preferred him over Nkunku, who also earned a 5.

Substitutes Fail to Turn the Tide

The substitutions brought in by Maresca did little to change the course of the game. Jadon Sancho, who started the match strong but has since lost his form, looked similarly underwhelming. Over his last 11 games, Sancho has managed only one assist, and his current performance suggests he might be repeating his struggles from Manchester United. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Reece James, and Tyrique George, who were brought on as substitutes, also failed to make a significant impact. Each of them earned a 6, indicating that while they showed some effort, it wasn’t enough to turn the tide.

Looking Forward

These consecutive defeats to Brighton highlight the pressing need for Chelsea to address both their defensive and attacking issues. The financial investments have not yet translated into the on-field performance the fans and management had hoped for. With injuries and suspensions further complicating the squad, Maresca and the team will need to find a way to rebuild their confidence and effectiveness. The upcoming matches will be crucial in determining whether the club can turn their fortunes around and compete at the top level of English football.
