And that that would be my ticket out.” This determination led him to skip countless social events and parties, even those happening just a few floors below his apartment, to focus on his training and maintain his physical condition.
A Father’s Shadow and Influence
Mateta’s resolve was further strengthened by the example set by his father, Philippe. Philippe, a Congolese-born player, had a promising career cut short by a serious leg injury at the age of 24. The lack of advanced medical treatment and failed surgeries ended his career prematurely, leaving him mentally devastated. Mateta later learned that his father had been against his son’s aspirations, fearing he would face similar hardships. However, Mateta’s resolve only grew stronger, and he began his football journey by joining Drancy, a local club, at the age of 14. His performances eventually caught the attention of Chateauroux, where he scored 13 goals in 26 third-tier games, drawing interest from larger clubs.
