Sergio Aguero: From Football to Formula E
Sergio Aguero, affectionately known as "Kun," needs no introduction. A Manchester City legend, Premier League icon, and a friend of Lionel Messi, Aguero’s storied career in football is nothing short of legendary. But now, the 36-year-old Argentinian striker is adding a new chapter to his life: Formula E racing driver. The transition from the football pitch to the racetrack is a bold move, but Aguero is no stranger to stepping out of his comfort zone. He is set to race a 200mph Porsche 99X Electric in the Formula E Evo Sessions in Miami next month, a decision that has both surprised and excited his fans.
Preparing for the Race
Aguero is taking his new role seriously, dedicating himself to rigorous preparation with Porsche. He practices in sports cars, spends hours on the simulator, and works on getting match-fit, much like he did during his football days. "Football is with your feet, racing is with your hands. But in both racing and football, you have to be very focused and not make mistakes," Aguero told us. His commitment is evident, and he is determined to represent his team to the best of his abilities.
A Passion for Racing and Hamilton
Aguero’s love for racing isn’t just a newfound hobby; it’s deeply rooted in his admiration for Formula 1 legend, Lewis Hamilton. "I hope Hamilton wins all the races and all the championships—this year, next year, every year. For me, he is the best," Aguero said. His support for Hamilton even extends to his feelings about the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where Max Verstappen clinched the championship. "I didn’t like how it ended. The decision that was taken was not fair. Hamilton should have won it," he added. This passion for motorsports is not just a spectator’s interest; it’s a driving force behind his transition to Formula E.
Racing with Celebrities
Aguero will be competing against ten other personalities in the Formula E Evo Sessions in Miami, including Brooklyn Beckham, actor Tom Felton (better known as Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter), and musician Lucien Laviscount. Despite the star-studded lineup, Aguero is confident and excited about the challenge. "We won’t be all together on the track, one or two of us maybe, but I will be checking the times of the other drivers to see if I need to push harder or not," he said. He even reminisced about a fun day he spent as a co-pilot with F1 driver Valtteri Bottas in a Mini Cooper. "When I was the pilot, Bottas looked scared. It was really good fun. It was a good day," Aguero recalled, hinting at his natural talent behind the wheel.
Life Beyond the Track
When the racing is over, Aguero enjoys the finer things in life, particularly his collection of high-performance vehicles. "I have a Cayenne Turbo in grey with gold wheels. It’s top. It’s good. I like big cars. I also have a Panamera Turbo S — but that’s in Spain. That one is a bit more powerful," he said. His love for cars is evident, and his garage is a testament to his taste and wealth.
A Legacy Beyond Football
Aguero’s legacy extends far beyond his incredible goal-scoring record. His stoppage-time winner against QPR in 2012, which secured Manchester City’s first Premier League title in 44 years, is etched in the annals of football history. The moment, immortalized by Sky TV commentator Martin Tyler’s iconic shout, "Aguerooo," is a source of pride for Aguero. "I remember perfectly that commentary. It was the most beautiful moment of my life. We won the Premier League with that goal. For me, Manchester was like my second home. I hope that City will always do well and continue to win titles because it is a club that I love a lot," he said. Beyond the accolades, Aguero is remembered for his kindness, such as gifting his Range Rover to the kit man and watches to the staff when he left City.
The Next Generation
Aguero’s legacy is also being carried forward by his teenage son, Benjamin, who is following in his father’s footsteps. "Yes, he is playing for Independiente, he’s doing his own path, under his own name. He’s doing well. Hopefully he continues his own way and makes a career. Little by little," Aguero said. The great Aguero, it seems, has not only left an indelible mark on football but is also setting his sights on the next generation.
In the world of sports, Sergio Aguero continues to captivate and inspire, whether on the football pitch or the Formula E racetrack. His transition from one iconic sport to another is a testament to his versatility, passion, and unwavering determination.
