Introducing a New Top-Tier Men’s Soccer League

The United Soccer League (USL) has announced plans to launch a new men’s professional league in 2027-28, which will compete at the top tier of U.S. soccer, equivalent to Major League Soccer (MLS). This ambitious move highlights the USL’s commitment to expanding the sport and providing more opportunities for players, clubs, and fans across the nation. The USL already operates two successful leagues: the second-tier USL Championship and the third-tier USL League One. Currently, MLS is the only Division One league in the United States, but this new initiative aims to change that dynamic.

Building on Existing Success

The USL has a strong foundation in U.S. soccer, with a proven track record of developing talent and fostering a love for the game at various levels. The new league is designed to build upon this success by establishing a "fully integrated pathway" for clubs and players across the three divisions. This means that teams and players will have a clear and structured path to advance, from the lower tiers to the top division. Alec Papadakis, CEO of the USL, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, "Creating a Division One league is a bold step forward, expanding access to top-tier competition, deepening the connection between our communities and taking another step in aligning with the structure of the global game." The league’s vision is not just to grow the sport but to create lasting opportunities and build a more sustainable and vibrant soccer ecosystem in the U.S.

Meeting the Standards

To achieve this ambitious goal, the new league will need to meet the stringent requirements set by the U.S. Soccer Federation. These include having a minimum of 12 teams, with stadiums that can seat at least 15,000 fans, and at least 75% of the teams must be located in cities with populations of 1 million or more. Additionally, teams must demonstrate financial viability. USL President Paul McDonough revealed that league officials have already met with U.S. Soccer, and there were no objections to the plan. However, the actual sanctioning will come later in the process, after the league has built its structure and provided all the necessary documentation.

Potential for Growth and Promotion

The new league is likely to see a number of current USL Championship teams moving up to the top division. Prominent candidates include teams from Sacramento, Louisville, Phoenix, and Las Vegas. The excitement around this potential promotion is evident, with Louisville posting on social media, "So did we just get promoted?" This sentiment reflects the community’s and the club’s enthusiasm for the opportunity to compete at the highest level. The USL’s plan to integrate the new league seamlessly with the existing structure will provide a clear pathway for these teams to advance, ensuring a competitive and dynamic environment.

Timeline and Application Process

The announcement of the new league comes at a pivotal time for soccer in North America. The Club World Cup will be held in the U.S. this summer, followed by the joint-hosting of the World Cup by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico in the following year. In 2028, Los Angeles will host the Olympics, further amplifying the growing interest in the sport. The USL plans to have a rigorous application process for both current USL teams and potential new clubs. The league will play a spring-to-fall calendar, similar to MLS, and will not have a college draft. There is also the possibility that the league may adopt a promotion-relegation system, adding another layer of competition and excitement.

Embracing the Future

As Major League Soccer celebrates its 30th season this year, the entry of a new top-tier league presents a significant opportunity to expand the sport’s reach and popularity. With 30 teams, including the new expansion club San Diego, MLS is already a formidable presence in U.S. soccer. The USL’s new league will not only provide more top-tier competition but also create a more robust and interconnected soccer ecosystem. The USL also operates the USL Super League, a top-division women’s league that launched last August, further demonstrating its commitment to the growth of the sport at all levels. The future of soccer in the United States looks brighter than ever, with the USL’s new top-tier league set to play a pivotal role in shaping this exciting future.
