Castro on Rejecting Premier League Bid
Santiago Castro, the 20-year-old Argentine striker who has made waves in Serie A, revealed his decision to join Bologna over several other European clubs, including a Premier League side. Castro’s choice was driven by more than just the financial incentives; it was about the genuine support and the opportunity to play at a higher level. “I had several options, including Fiorentina, Genoa, and a Premier League club,” Castro told Il Resto del Carlino. “But two things made the difference: the opportunity to play in the Champions League and the way Bologna welcomed me. Di Vaio, Sartori, and Fenucci called me often—not to talk about contracts, but to check how I was doing. That made the difference.”
Inter Idols and Personal Inspiration
Despite being linked with a move to Inter Milan, Castro remains grounded and focused on his current team. The young forward has always had a deep admiration for Inter icons, particularly the legendary Diego Milito and current captain Lautaro Martínez. “When I first started following football, my idol was Inter’s Milito,” Castro reminisced. “Then Pratto from Vélez, whom I even got to play with. And of course, Lautaro. These players have been a huge inspiration for me, but my primary focus is always on Bologna and doing the best I can for the club.”
Commitment to Bologna
While the speculation about his future may be tempting, Castro is clear about his current commitments. He emphasizes that the support and environment at Bologna have played a significant role in his development and happiness. “I can take [Inter’s interest] as motivation, sure, but I have to focus only on my team and doing well here,” Castro stated. “The league table and the Coppa Italia are my only fixed thoughts. I can’t waste energy on anything else.” His dedication to the Rossoblù is evident in his performance, with six goals and five assists in 24 appearances during his second Serie A season.
The Decision-Making Process
Castro’s decision to join Bologna was a well-considered one. The club’s genuine interest and the chance to play in Europe’s top competitions were key factors. “Di Vaio, Sartori, and Fenucci called me often to check on my well-being, not just to discuss contractual details,” he explained. “Their approach showed me that Bologna cared about me as a person, not just as a player. This kind of support is invaluable, especially for a young player looking to establish himself in a new league.”
Life in Bologna
For Castro, life in Bologna extends beyond the football pitch. He has found a welcoming community in the city, which has made his transition smoother. “I don’t know [if I will stay], in football, you never know,” Castro admitted. “What I do know is that I’m very happy here—with the city, with the club. I like walking around, fans stopping me. Bologna is truly a wonderful environment.” The positive atmosphere and the connection with the fans have solidified his affection for the club, making him a beloved figure at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara.
Future Aspirations and Focus
Although the future is uncertain in football, Castro’s immediate goal is to continue his impressive form for Bologna. He is determined to help the team achieve its objectives, whether it be securing a strong position in the league or making progress in the Coppa Italia. “I’m very happy here, and my focus is entirely on contributing to Bologna’s success,” he concluded. “The transfer speculation can wait. Right now, I’m just enjoying my time with the team and the fans who have made me feel like part of their family.”
