Upcoming Match: Everton v Manchester United
This weekend, Everton and Manchester United will clash on the pitch in what promises to be a must-win game for both sides, streaming live on TNT Sports and discovery+. The match is significant not only for its implications on the Premier League table but also because it marks the first time David Moyes will face his former club, Everton, since his return to manage the Toffees in January.
A Return to Goodison Park
David Moyes’s connection to Everton is deep and enduring. His first tenure at the club was so successful that he was handpicked to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in 2013. However, that stint was short-lived, lasting only 10 months before Moyes was sacked. Since then, Moyes has had a highly successful spell at West Ham United, where he managed to turn the club’s fortunes around and even won the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2023.
The Pressure Mounts
Tomorrow’s match holds a special significance for Moyes, given his history with both clubs. Everton currently stands in 15th place, just one point above the relegation zone, while Manchester United is also struggling, albeit in a slightly better position. The pressure is on Ruben Amorim to deliver results at Old Trafford, a situation Moyes can certainly sympathize with. "I played them a lot when I was manager of West Ham. It’s another game in many ways. It’s a great football club, but my job is to try and beat them at the moment," Moyes said in his press conference on Friday.
Overcoming Adversity
Moyes is no stranger to adversity, and he has always found ways to bounce back. "There are very few managers who have things always go in one direction. You have lots of ups and downs. Even the best managers have times when it’s not so good," he reflected. "I had to find a way of fighting back from the disappointment of losing my job at Manchester United and finding ways to get myself back to a good level. We’ve done that at West Ham, won a trophy at West Ham." Moyes is hoping to replicate that success at Goodison Park, starting with securing Everton’s Premier League status and then pushing for European football.
Recent Form and Expectations
Everton currently sits on 30 points, alongside Crystal Palace and Tottenham, 13 points above the drop zone. While this may not be the most comfortable position, it is not yet a cause for panic. Moyes has delivered impressive results since taking over from Sean Dyche in mid-January, winning four and drawing one of their last five fixtures. "I always think Manchester United is one of the biggest fixtures of the season wherever you are. They’ve always got good players. They’ve got so many talented players who are so good at what they do," Moyes said. "They’re probably having a bit of a difficult patch at the moment. It’s very rare to see Manchester United in the league position that they’re in. But we need to see if we can build on what we’ve done here at Everton."
