A Unique Identity: Born in Italy, Raised in London, Representing Nigeria

Nigerian international Calvin Bassey occupies a unique position in the world of football. Born in Italy and raised in London, the Fulham defender had the rare opportunity to represent three different countries. However, the decision to play for Nigeria was a natural choice for him. "It’s a different type of feeling you can’t really put into words," Bassey shared, reflecting on the profound significance of playing for the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s men’s national soccer team. Now, roughly three years into his international career, Bassey is part of the lineage of football legends like Jay-Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, and John Obi Mikel. "For us, we looked up to these guys, and we wanted to be part of it," Bassey explained, emphasizing the deep sense of pride and connection he feels to his Nigerian heritage.

Navigating Dual Worlds: Growing Up in an African Home in London

Growing up as a first-generation Nigerian in London, Bassey experienced a dual cultural environment. "There were two different sets of rules — one for outside and one in the home. I think my mom thought Nigeria was in the house and that outside the house was the UK," he recalled. Despite the contrast, Bassey found the experience enriching. His mother’s strict adherence to Nigerian values and traditions ensured he remained connected to his roots. "When I eventually came to play for Nigeria, I was used to certain things, like the food. So when I went back to Nigeria, it wasn’t a big shock or difference to me," he said. The strong Nigerian community in London also played a crucial role in maintaining his cultural identity. "It’s nice! We all go through sort of similar experiences. My friends are also, all first-generation in England. We’re all living in this sort of bubble together, with this difference at home and difference outside," Bassey added.

The Harsh Realities and Football as a Shield

Bassey’s journey to becoming a professional footballer was not without its challenges. Growing up in Newham, a borough known for its tough environment, he often faced the stark choice between joining a gang or playing football. "Where I’m from, you either end up in a gang or play football," he stated. The values instilled in him by his mother, particularly the emphasis on hard work and dedication, played a pivotal role in guiding him away from the wrong path. "My mom always spoke about hard work. She emphasized that nothing’s handed to you — you have to go and get it, and you have to work hard. You have to be focused," Bassey explained. Football became his sanctuary, providing a structured environment that fostered respect, discipline, and a strong work ethic. "Football really shielded me from that. It kept me distracted and busy. Those experiences, together, made me the person I am today," he said.

The Inspiring Moment: Playing for the Super Eagles

Bassey’s decision to represent Nigeria was solidified by a pivotal moment during the 2018 World Cup. Watching Lionel Messi score against Nigeria, he was inspired by the opportunity to play against the world’s best. "I think it was just seeing the greatest player to ever play, playing against my team. [Nigeria] lost 2-1. I think one of my teammates that I played with, Kenneth Omeruo, played that game. Just watching that game, I wanted to be in that position," Bassey recalled. The pride and significance of representing his country were clear. "I know how big of a nation Nigeria is and how much pride comes with playing for them. I just worked hard. When I got the opportunity, I didn’t take time [to decide] — I just knew that I wanted to play for Nigeria," he said. The passion and support from his family, especially his mother, further fueled his determination. "When I’m on that pitch playing for Nigeria, she’s supporting like crazy. Her passion is just crazy. She’s just screaming! She thinks I can hear her, and I’m like ‘I can’t hear it Mom, there’s like 60,000 people in the stadium!’ But it’s nice, and that just fuels me to want to do more," Bassey shared.

The ‘Innit Boys’: A New Wave of London-Raised Nigerians

Bassey is part of a new wave of London-raised Nigerians playing for the Super Eagles, a group affectionately dubbed the ‘Innit Boys.’ This unique community of players, with similar backgrounds, has rekindled a deep connection to their Nigerian roots. "I think it’s good. With us going back to our family roots, I think a lot more players have done it as well. I feel like because most of us were first-generation, we really feel connected to our Nigerian roots. We know how big of a country it is and how big they are in football, with some of the Nigerian stars that came through," Bassey explained. The group’s common experience of leaving their homeland and starting anew has created a strong bond. "For us, we looked up to these guys, and we wanted to be part of it. It’s a nice feeling. Hopefully, we inspire more boys who are born in England to at least consider playing back home," he added. This sense of unity and shared heritage is a powerful motivator for Bassey and his teammates.

Continuing the Legacy: Fulham and the Premier League

In his second year with Fulham, Bassey has found a nurturing and ambitious environment. "My time’s been alright. We’ve got some good guys — funny guys. It’s a nice club. I think everyone’s nice. It’s a nice team. It’s a club that’s growing, which I like. It’s good to be part of it. The manager [Marco Silva] is very ambitious," he said. The emphasis on teamwork and mutual respect has been a significant part of his growth. "I wouldn’t say I’ve learned anything particularly new, but I feel like the manager himself has emphasized being a family — being together — and he’s just made it more and more important, making us value it more," Bassey shared. The presence and success of African players in the Premier League have been a source of pride and inspiration. "The talent that’s come from Nigeria is unbelievable! I believe our team is very [strong], but to be part of the group of Nigerian players who’ve played in the Premier League, it’s a blessing," he said. Bassey’s journey and achievements serve as a powerful message to the next generation: "Trust yourself, have belief, and work hard."
