Manchester United’s Worst-Ever Premier League Season
Manchester United is on a concerning trajectory, poised to log their worst goal-scoring tally in a single Premier League season. Under the management of Ruben Amorim, the Red Devils have scored just 30 goals in 26 games, putting them on track to finish the season with a mere 44 goals. This abysmal record is a stark contrast to their last worst season in the Premier League, which occurred under Louis van Gaal in 2015-16 when they scored 49 goals. With the team currently languishing in 15th place, it is becoming increasingly clear that the problem lies in their inability to convert opportunities into goals.
The Plight of Hojlund and Zirkzee
Central to the Red Devils’ struggles are their two main strikers, Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee. Both players have underperformed this season, contributing to the team’s poor form in front of goal. Hojlund and Zirkzee have played nearly equal minutes, with Hojlund logging just over 200 more minutes than Zirkzee, who has made five more appearances. However, their goal-scoring records are nothing short of disappointing. Hojlund has managed only two goals (0.14 goals per 90 minutes), while Zirkzee has three (0.26 per 90). Even worse, their combined goal tally is equal to that of Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol, highlighting their inefficiency.
Missed Opportunities and Underwhelming Performance
The numbers do not lie; Hojlund and Zirkzee have taken only 16 and 23 shots, respectively, ranking 29th and 25th in the Premier League. This lack of effort in attempting to score is a significant concern. However, it is not as though they have lacked support. Manchester United has created the eighth-most chances in the Premier League this season (267), which is a clear indication that the midfield is doing its part. The problem lies in the strikers’ inability to capitalize on these opportunities. Hojlund has missed three big chances, while Zirkzee has missed double that amount, further exacerbating the team’s woes.
Comparative Performance and Additional Contributions
Despite their poor goal-scoring records, Zirkzee has shown some promise as a provider. He has created four big chances compared to Hojlund’s three and has completed more passes in the final third (128) than Hojlund (79). Additionally, Zirkzee has managed more take-ons (25 compared to Hojlund’s 20). These statistics suggest that Zirkzee may be more versatile and willing to contribute to the team’s playmaking, even if his finishing has been lacking.
The Future at Old Trafford
Amorim must now weigh his options for the upcoming matches and the summer transfer window. He has recently brought in academy star Chido Obi, a 6’5” forward, to the matchday squad. While Obi has shown signs of nervousness in his limited appearances, it is important to note that these are likely growing pains. The youngster has the potential to develop into a formidable presence, but he will need time to adapt to the Premier League’s demands.
Potential Changes and Transfer Targets
With the current situation, it is not unreasonable for Manchester United to consider overhauling their striking options. Several names have been linked with a move to Old Trafford, including Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, who has a history with Amorim. Other notable targets include Benjamin Sesko, Jonathan David, and Alexander Isak, all of whom could provide the goal-scoring prowess that has been sorely missing from the Red Devils’ lineup. Given the caliber of these potential replacements, it may be time for Man Utd to reassess and potentially offload Hojlund and Zirkzee in the summer to rejuvenate their attacking lineup.
