Eliot Baker’s Triumph at the 95th Portuguese Amateur Championship

England’s rising star Eliot Baker emerged as the champion of the 95th Portuguese Amateur Championship, held at the prestigious Penina Hotel & Golf Resort. At just 22 years old, Baker’s victory marks a significant milestone in his budding golfing career. His exceptional performance, which saw him finish at -19, was three shots ahead of Czech Republic’s Louis Klein and four clear of fellow Englishman Daniel Hayes, who secured the third spot. This win is not only a personal best for Baker but also a testament to his growing prowess in the competitive world of amateur golf.

A Journey of Nerves and Confidence

The Devon-born golfer, who recently claimed victory at the West of England Open Match Play in September, admitted to feeling a mix of nerves and excitement as he stepped up to tee off on the final day. "I was feeling some nerves before I teed off in the final round, but once I got the first hole out of the way, I was mostly comfortable," Baker revealed. His calm demeanor and steady play throughout the tournament were key to his success. As he stood on the 18th tee with a comfortable three-shot lead, Baker’s confidence was palpable. "I was pretty sure I could see it out from there!" he said, reflecting on his final moments on the course.

A Moment of Momentum

One of the standout moments of the tournament was a spectacular 75-foot eagle putt on the 18th hole during the second round. "That boosted my confidence and felt like a big momentum shift for the rest of the tournament," Baker recalled. This pivotal moment not only solidified his lead but also provided a psychological edge that carried him through the remaining rounds. The young golfer’s ability to capitalize on such pivotal moments is a sign of his maturing game and mental fortitude.

Celebrating with Family and Friends

Baker’s victory is more than just a personal achievement; it’s a celebration of hard work and dedication. "It’s definitely my biggest win to date and I’ll be celebrating by having a few drinks with my family when I get home. I’m sure the trophy will make its way onto the mantelpiece too!" he shared, highlighting the importance of family and support in his journey. The triumph is a reflection of the collective effort and support he has received from his loved ones and his club, Tiverton Golf Club.

A Look Ahead to 2025

With a busy calendar of events on the horizon for 2025, Baker is setting his sights on more glory. "It’s a proud achievement to win this tournament with so many talented players from around Europe. I hope I can keep giving myself opportunities to win golf tournaments throughout the year, and hopefully I can close out a few more," he said. His focus remains on continuous improvement and pushing forward, confident that the results will follow. "I just want to keep improving my overall game and push forward, and hopefully the results will come," he added, demonstrating a balanced approach to his ambitious goals.

England’s Strong Showing in the Nations Cup

The English contingent had a strong showing beyond the individual triumph. Ben Brown, who finished tied-13th, was a notable performer, and nine other English players made the cut to finish among the top-42 players. England also clinched the Nations Cup over the first three rounds, thanks to the stellar performances of Andrew Haswell, Ben Brown, and Tom Osborne. The trio led England to a -22 total, a commanding five-shot lead over Italy II and a seven-shot advantage over Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and Wales. This team success underscores the depth and talent within the English amateur golfing ranks, setting the stage for continued success on the international stage.
