Arrival and Early Struggles in Denver

When Zakhar Bardakov first arrived in Denver for optional skates ahead of Colorado Avalanche training camp, his defensive shortcomings were glaring. The young Russian forward, who joined the team via a trade with the New Jersey Devils, faced significant challenges in adapting to the North American game. His struggles in defensive drills were hard to ignore, and many wondered whether he could make the necessary adjustments to thrive in the NHL. However, Bardakov’s determination and work ethic have been key to his transformation.

Transforming Weakness into Strength

Over the past few months, Bardakov has turned what was once a significant weakness into one of his emerging strengths. His progress has not gone unnoticed, particularly by his captain, Gabe Landeskog. After Colorado’s 3–1 win over the Vancouver Canucks, a game that started slowly, Bardakov was a standout, flying around the ice and forechecking with relentless energy. Landeskog praised Bardakov’s development, highlighting his powerful skating and unwavering commitment to the game. “He’s a really good skater, a powerful guy, and he continues to adapt to this game here,” Landeskog said. “I thought he’s done a great job. Training camp, he (earned) that spot, continues to work well and work hard and it’s not easy for anybody.”

The Value Beyond Statistics

While statistics are undoubtedly important in hockey, they often overshadow the contributions of players like Bardakov, who may not put up MacKinnon-level totals but are crucial to the team’s success in other ways. Bardakov is a player who is always working to get to the play, committed to checking on both sides of the puck, and relentless in pressuring opponents into mistakes that create opportunities for his teammates. Landeskog was particularly impressed with Bardakov’s performance against the Canucks. “Tonight, he was really strong. It was one of his stronger games in a while, and he continues to bring a lot of energy. He’s a physical guy, a strong guy. He continues to put himself in good spots to put pucks at the net and create offense.”

A Promising Journey to the NHL

Bardakov has been on Colorado’s radar for an NHL contract since he arrived in the trade deal with the New Jersey Devils. The former 2021 seventh-round pick delivered a standout season with SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL, recording 17 goals and 35 points in 53 games. This impressive performance earned him a one-year, entry-level contract for the 2025–26 season, which he signed in April. His journey from a seventh-round pick to a promising NHL player is a testament to his hard work and dedication to the game. Bardakov’s first NHL goal, scored on October 28 against the New Jersey Devils, was a significant milestone. On a night when Victor Olofsson recorded his first career hat trick and a career-high five points, Bardakov’s goal was a fitting contribution to the Avalanche’s 8–4 victory.

The Future Looks Bright

Bardakov’s rapid improvement and dedication to the game have positioned him as a valuable asset for the Colorado Avalanche. His ability to forecheck with intensity, his strong physical presence, and his willingness to play a complete 200-foot game have earned him the respect of his teammates and the coaching staff. As he continues to develop and refine his skills, the future looks bright for the young Russian forward. His journey is a reminder that in hockey, as in life, perseverance and hard work can lead to remarkable achievements.
