Alex Pereira Reconsiders Training with Jon Jones

UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira, known affectionately as "Poatan," has undergone a significant change of heart regarding his plans to train with Jon Jones. Previously, Pereira expressed keen interest in joining Jones’ training camp ahead of Jones’ title defense against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309. However, with his own title defense against Magomed Ankalaev scheduled for the main event of UFC 313 this Saturday in Las Vegas, Pereira now believes that training with Jones might not be the best move. "To be honest, I don’t think that makes as much sense anymore," Pereira told Bloody Elbow through a Portuguese translator. "Back when I said that I would like to fight at heavyweight, people already put the dots together and basically mentioned Jon Jones. That’s something that is speculated, even if it’s just by the fans."

Fans and Speculations

Pereira’s initial interest in training with Jones stemmed from the potential for a heavyweight superfight, a matchup that fans and pundits have been eagerly anticipating. The idea of Pereira stepping up to heavyweight was met with excitement, and many saw Jones as a logical opponent. However, as the landscape of the heavyweight division has evolved, Pereira recognizes the potential downsides of such a collaboration. "So I wouldn’t want to go and train with him now, and then if we end up fighting, people will start saying a bunch of stuff about whatever in the fight," he explained. "I think it wouldn’t make sense now, but if we were to fight one day and then go train, I think it would make total sense."

The Current Heavyweight Landscape

Jones’ future in the heavyweight division remains murky following his dominant finish over Stipe Miocic last November. Despite the lopsided victory, Jones has been calling out Pereira for a champion versus champion fight for several months. This has created a buzz within the MMA community, but UFC CEO Dana White and the broader fan base would prefer to see Jones unifying the title with interim champion and No. 1 contender Tom Aspinall. Pereira, recognizing the importance of this title unification, has a nuanced view of the situation. "I’d watch it closely, but as a fan," he said. "Obviously, any heavyweight fight is already exciting, and then you put in Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall. I think that’s a very exciting fight, so I’ll be tuning in."

Pereira’s Focus on UFC 313

While Pereira is aware of the speculation and the potential for a future superfight, his primary focus remains on his upcoming bout against Magomed Ankalaev. The Brazilian champion, who has cemented his status as one of the most formidable fighters in the light heavyweight division, is determined to put on a show. "Magomed is a tough opponent, and I’m fully committed to this fight," Pereira emphasized. "I’ve been training hard, and I’m confident in my skills. My team and I have put in the work, and we’re ready to defend the title with everything we’ve got."

The Speculation Continues

The MMA world is a place where speculations run rampant, and the idea of a Pereira vs. Jones superfight is no exception. Fans and analysts alike have been drawing parallels between the two champions, comparing their fighting styles and predicting hypothetical outcomes. While Pereira respects Jones’ abilities and acknowledges the excitement surrounding a potential matchup, he remains grounded. "Jon Jones is a legend, and any fight involving him is going to be hyped up," Pereira noted. "But at the moment, my priority is to stay focused on Magomed Ankalaev. If a fight with Jon Jones happens down the line, we’ll handle it then."

Looking Forward

As the fight week approaches, Pereira is keeping his preparations on track and his mind clear of distractions. He understands the significance of his role as the light heavyweight champion and the expectations that come with it. "I’m honored to be in this position, and I take my responsibilities seriously," he concluded. "I’ll be watching the Jones vs. Aspinall fight, but for now, all my energy is dedicated to UFC 313. Afterward, who knows? The future is always uncertain, and we’ll see where the wind takes us. But one thing is for sure: I’m ready to put on a great show this Saturday."
