Dustin Poirier’s Perspective on Weight Classes
Dustin Poirier, a seasoned veteran and former interim UFC lightweight champion, understands the significance of weight classes in combat sports. As he awaits the final fight of his illustrious career, Poirier remains deeply engaged with the sport, particularly with the lightweight division. The current champion, Islam Makhachev, has been a dominant force, but recent hints suggest he might be considering a move to a new weight class. Poirier, with his wealth of experience, has a keen eye on these developments and offers his insights on the potential moves.
Makhachev’s Potential Move to Welterweight
Makhachev’s dominance at lightweight has been undeniable, but the champion is contemplating his next steps. A move to welterweight (170 pounds) seems logical, given his physical attributes and the current landscape of the division. However, Makhachev is hesitant to step on the toes of his friend and frequent training partner, Belal Muhammad, who holds the welterweight title. Poirier believes Makhachev would excel at 170 pounds, suggesting that he could become a champion in that division as well. "Islam’s a big guy. He can fight 170 for sure. He could become the champion at 170, I believe," Poirier stated. This move would not only challenge Makhachev but also add another layer of intrigue to the welterweight division.
The Middleweight Conundrum
While welterweight is a viable option, Makhachev has also hinted at the possibility of moving up to middleweight (185 pounds). Poirier, however, is skeptical about this move. "185, the guys are just too big," he noted. The size difference at middleweight could pose significant challenges for Makhachev, who has already established himself as a formidable force at lightweight. Poirier’s concern is rooted in the physical demands and the caliber of opponents at 185 pounds, which might not align with Makhachev’s strengths and legacy goals.
Topuria’s Aspirations at Lightweight
On the other side of the spectrum, UFC featherweight champion Ilia Topuria is eyeing a move to lightweight. After securing impressive knockout wins over Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway in 2024, Topuria has shown a keen interest in pursuing the 155-pound title currently held by Makhachev. Poirier acknowledges Topuria’s skills, particularly his boxing, which he believes could be a match for Makhachev. "If he can stop the takedowns, his boxing’s better than Islam’s. He’s a bigger puncher," Poirier said. However, he also points out that the size difference could be a significant hurdle for Topuria. "The size difference is just too much [for Topuria], I believe," Poirier added, suggesting that Topuria might need to bulk up considerably to compete effectively at lightweight.
Makhachev’s Stance on Topuria
Makhachev, for his part, has been dismissive of the idea of facing Topuria at lightweight. He has already defeated Volkanovski twice and is not keen on continuing to face smaller opponents that do not offer the same level of prestige for his legacy. Makhachev’s focus seems to be on maintaining his dominance at 155 pounds or exploring a new division where he can face more formidable challenges. Poirier, while not directly addressing Makhachev’s feelings, seems to concur that a lightweight matchup between Makhachev and Topuria might not be in Topuria’s favor due to the significant size disparity.
The Future of Lightweight and Beyond
As both Makhachev and Topuria await their next assignments, the future of the lightweight division remains uncertain. Makhachev, currently ranked as the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the sport, has a strong case for moving to a new division. Whether he chooses welterweight or decides to stay at lightweight, his decision will have a profound impact on the division. For Topuria, the path to lightweight is fraught with challenges, but his recent performances have shown that he is a force to be reckoned with. Only time will tell if these potential moves will materialize, but one thing is clear: the lightweight division is poised for some exciting developments in the near future.
