Megan Anderson’s Farewell to MMA

Megan Anderson, once a formidable contender in the UFC, found her path in mixed martial arts reaching its conclusion in March 2021 when she faced the two-division queen Amanda Nunes. The bout marked the last time the UFC featherweight title was ever on the line, and Anderson’s loss cemented her decision to step away from the sport. Despite the intense and often grueling nature of professional MMA, Anderson has never looked back. Instead, she has found new ways to stay connected to the fighting world, including her role as a commentator for Invicta FC. Anderson has been candid about her future in combat sports, stating that she has no desire to return to the octagon. However, she has left the door slightly ajar for a fun and less serious venture, like an influencer boxing match. "I have no desire to fight anymore," Anderson said. "I don’t even think I could make 145 pounds anymore — I definitely do, I miss cutting weight. Maybe do like a Influencer boxing bout or something like that down the line. Who knows, ‘cause I just started boxing again like for fun with my trainer, so maybe that — but it’s more of like a 20 percent maybe."

Professional accomplishments and Transition

During her MMA career, Anderson established a professional record of 10-5, marked by six knockout victories between 2013 and 2021. Her notable triumphs include a stoppage over Norma Dumont in the UFC and a head kick knockout against Charmaine Tweet, which earned her the interim Invicta FC featherweight title. At 35, Anderson reflects on her journey with a mix of pride and realism. "I did everything that I wanted to accomplish in the sport of mixed martial arts," she explained. "Obviously didn’t end the way that I wanted to, but being able to transition into the broadcasting side, I think is so fulfilling for me because I’m still able to be involved in the sport. I’m able to talk about the sport that I love, that has given me so much." Her transition from fighter to commentator has been seamless, allowing her to stay close to the sport she dedicated years to.

The Allure of Influencer Boxing

While professional boxing is off the table for Anderson, the idea of an influencer boxing match has caught her interest. These bouts, often less competitive and more about entertainment, could offer a fun and light-hearted return to the ring. "I would never do professional boxing," Anderson said. "It would definitely be like influencer boxing, just something that’s fun. Nothing too serious. I’m not trying to get knocked out [laughs], I’m not trying to fight Claressa Shields. I’m good, thank you [laughs]. I mean, if the price is right, you never know. But at this stage, I enjoy what I’m doing, I enjoy this side of things." The possibility of engaging in a less intense form of combat sports is intriguing, but it would have to be the right opportunity.

Embracing a New Role

Anderson’s current role as a commentator for Invicta FC has provided her with a new sense of fulfillment. "I love what I’m doing now," she emphasized. "I did everything that I wanted to accomplish in the sport of mixed martial arts. Being able to transition into the broadcasting side, I think is so fulfilling for me because I’m still able to be involved in the sport. I’m able to talk about the sport that I love, that has given me so much." Her involvement with Invicta FC, a promotion known for showcasing top female fighters, allows her to be a part of the sport’s growth and evolution. She feels a deep connection to the organization and its fighters, highlighting the importance of her role in building and supporting the next generation.

A Proud Older Sister

As a commentator, Anderson has the unique opportunity to watch and support the young athletes who are making their mark in MMA. "Being around it and seeing all these young athletes come through it makes me feel really old, honestly [laughs]. I feel ancient. But I love watching them come through, seeing where their careers go," she shared. Anderson sees herself as a mentor, someone who can offer guidance and support to up-and-coming fighters. "I kind of feel like a proud older sister. I get to watch them come through, give them some advice. If anyone ever reaches out wanting advice, I’m always there. I’m happy to help them in any way. That’s more than I can ask." Her role behind the mic has allowed her to continue contributing to the sport in a meaningful and positive way.

Gratitude and the Future

Anderson’s journey from fighter to commentator has been one of personal and professional growth. She expresses deep gratitude for her current position and the opportunities it affords her. "I love that I get to do this, and I’m so grateful that I am in the position that I am to be able to continue doing this. Being around it and seeing all these young athletes come through it makes me feel really old, honestly [laughs]. I feel ancient. But I love watching them come through, seeing where their careers go." Her enthusiasm and willingness to help others in the sport underscore her deep commitment to the MMA community. While she may not return to the octagon, Anderson’s influence and presence continue to be felt, ensuring her legacy in combat sports remains strong.
