Paddy Pimblett’s Take on Ilia Topuria’s Lightweight Move
Paddy Pimblett is more than ready to welcome Ilia Topuria as he potentially transitions into the lightweight division. Topuria’s performance in 2024 was nothing short of spectacular, earning him the Fighter of the Year title after knockout wins against two of the greatest fighters in MMA history, Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway. His success has propelled him to even greater heights, with Topuria eyeing a move up to 155 pounds. However, Pimblett believes that such a move is premature, given Topuria’s limited experience in defending the featherweight belt. "Ilia’s a midget," Pimblett told Daniel Cortes, emphasizing the physical disparity between them. "People don’t understand how much bigger I am than Ilia. I’m so much bigger than him; people don’t realize. I’d love to do a stare down with him, just so everyone can see how much bigger I actually am than him."
The Skepticism Behind Topuria’s Fast-Track to Success
Pimblett’s skepticism extends beyond just the physical aspect. He acknowledges Topuria’s fighting prowess but questions the circumstances that led to his rapid ascent to the featherweight championship. "Don’t get me wrong, he’s very good. Just because I don’t like him doesn’t mean I’m going to sit here and lie. He’s a very good fighter. He is. But I also think he got fast-tracked to the belt because [Volkanovski] had cleared the featherweight division out already. I think he got fast-tracked to the belt. He’d only beaten Bryce Mitchell and Josh Emmett and got a title shot. He didn’t even have to beat Brian Ortega or Yair Rodriguez or Arnold Allen. He skipped these fighters and got to fight for the belt just because Volk had cleared the division out." This perspective highlights Pimblett’s belief that Topuria’s path to the championship was not as rigorous as it should have been.
The Volkanovski vs. Topuria Controversy
Pimblett also challenges the legitimacy of Topuria’s victory over Volkanovski. He argues that Volkanovski’s condition during the fight may have influenced the outcome. "And I personally don’t think he knocks Volk out unless Volk got head kicked 12 weeks before by Islam [Makhachev]. I think Volk fought far too soon. Volk was winning that first and second round until he got caught. I think the rematch is going to be very telling because, obviously, he knocked Holloway out. Holloway’s never been knocked out, but he’s been in several wars. He’s taken a lot of damage." Pimblett suggests that a rematch could provide a clearer picture of Topuria’s true capabilities and whether he truly deserves the title of the greatest featherweight of all time.
The Criteria for Moving Up in Weight
Pimblett sets a high bar for fighters looking to transition into a new weight class. He believes that Topuria should defend his featherweight title multiple times before considering a move to lightweight. "I think you need to defend the belt at least three times if you want to fight for the belt in the division above." This stance reflects Pimblett’s respect for the integrity of the sport and the importance of earning one’s place through consistent performance and dedication. By setting this standard, Pimblett is emphasizing the value of proven success in one’s current division before venturing into new challenges.
A History of Rivalry
The animosity between Pimblett and Topuria is not new. Their rivalry dates back to 2022 when an altercation occurred at a UFC London event where both were competing. The tension between them escalated further at the UFC 282 press conference, where they nearly came to blows before security intervened. Despite the history, Pimblett remains open to a fair fight with Topuria. "If he wants to come to lightweight, I’m here waiting. I’ll be there to welcome him. I don’t think anyone else in the division has got more of a claim to welcome him to the division than I have. I’d love to have a fair fight with him and kick him all over the gaff." This statement underscores Pimblett’s confidence and his readiness to prove himself against one of the sport’s rising stars.
Looking Forward to the Matchup
As the MMA world watches with anticipation, the potential matchup between Pimblett and Topuria at lightweight could be a defining moment for both fighters. Pimblett’s willingness to engage in a fair fight and his respect for Topuria’s abilities, despite their personal history, highlight the competitive spirit and sportsmanship that are hallmarks of the sport. Whether Topuria decides to move up to lightweight or stays at featherweight, the rivalry between these two formidable fighters is sure to continue to captivate fans and shape the future of MMA.
