Stephen Thompson’s admiration for Georges St-Pierre
Stephen Thompson, affectionately known as "Wonderboy" in the MMA world, has faced and trained with some of the best fighters in the sport, but none have left a more profound impact on him than Georges St-Pierre (GSP). Since 2008, Thompson has been a regular part of GSP’s training camps, playing a crucial role in preparing the Canadian legend for his string of dominant victories over the likes of B.J. Penn, Carlos Condit, Nick Diaz, and other elite welterweights. However, what truly impressed Thompson was not just GSP’s prowess in the octagon but his humility and eagerness to learn, even when it meant being pushed to his limits.
St-Pierre’s relentless pursuit of improvement
Despite being a multiple-time champion, GSP consistently put himself in training situations where he was outmatched, ensuring he was always learning and growing. If it was striking, GSP sought out sparring partners who were superior to him, such as Stephen Thompson. For jiu-jitsu, he trained with Roger Gracie, who was not only heavier but also incredibly skilled. Thompson vividly remembers watching GSP and Rashad Evans spar at Tristar Gym, describing it as a humbling and enlightening experience. GSP’s willingness to be submitted repeatedly by Gracie and his ability to handle setbacks with grace and determination taught Thompson a valuable lesson in the importance of an "empty cup" mentality—coming to the gym every day ready to learn and improve, regardless of past successes.
Thompson’s journey to MMA
Thompson’s relationship with GSP and the Tristar Gym team began in 2008 when he caught their attention during a kickboxing competition. With a strong background in karate and kickboxing, Thompson was an ideal training partner for GSP, helping him refine his striking skills and adapt to different standup styles. This experience was so rewarding that it motivated Thompson to make the transition from kickboxing to MMA full-time. Thompson, who was in his early 20s at the time, recalls how he initially felt inadequate as a sparring partner, often getting taken down repeatedly. This spurred him to focus more on jiu-jitsu and wrestling, skills that were not as prominent in his kickboxing career. GSP saw Thompson’s potential and continued to bring him to Montreal for every training camp leading up to his retirement, solidifying their friendship and professional bond.
A mentor and a role model
GSP’s influence extended beyond the training mat. Thompson was deeply inspired by GSP’s work ethic and dedication to his teammates. Even after a grueling training camp and a successful fight, GSP would stay in the gym, supporting his training partners who were preparing for their own matches. This commitment to the community and the sport resonated with Thompson, who has since made it a priority to contribute to the development of his own training partners. Thompson’s respect for GSP is evident, highlighting how the champion’s mindset and actions have shaped his own approach to training and competition.
Thompson’s career highlights
While Thompson never won the UFC welterweight title as GSP did, he has achieved significant success in his MMA career. Now 42 years old, Thompson boasts a professional MMA record of 17-8-1, with notable wins over top-tier fighters such as Robert Whittaker, Rory MacDonald, Jorge Masvidal, Geoff Neal, and Vicente Luque. His journey to No. 1 contender status and his two bouts against Tyron Woodley for the belt are a testament to his skill and determination. Thompson’s reputation as the UFC’s unofficial "NMF" (Nicest Mother F*cker) champion further underscores his character and the respect he commands both inside and outside the octagon.
Giving back to the community
Following GSP’s example, Thompson has made it a point to give back to the MMA community. He believes that the support he received from his training partners, especially the Tristar team, was instrumental in his development as a fighter. Therefore, he feels a strong obligation to pay it forward, ensuring that the next generation of fighters has the same opportunities for growth and improvement. Thompson’s commitment to mentoring and supporting his training partners reflects the positive impact that GSP’s leadership and humility have had on his life and career.
