Dan Rowbottom’s Return to the BTCC After Open Heart Surgery

In a remarkable show of resilience and determination, two-time British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) race winner Dan Rowbottom has signed on with the Alliance Racing-run NAPA Ford Focus squad for the next two seasons. This commitment comes on the heels of a significant personal health challenge, as Rowbottom underwent open heart surgery at the end of 2024 due to a congenital heart condition he has lived with since birth. The 36-year-old West Midlander has always been a standout in the world of motorsport, and his journey back to the track is as inspiring as it is thrilling for fans and teammates alike.

A Promising Start in 2023

Rowbottom’s foray into the BTCC with the NAPA Racing squad in 2023 was marked by immediate success and fanfare. His single race win that year was a testament to his skill and the team’s growing prowess. However, what truly turned heads was his pole position at the opening round, a feat achieved under unique circumstances when no one was restricted by hybrid boost usage. This early success not only solidified his presence in the championship but also set the stage for future ambitions. Despite finishing seventh in the championship, Rowbottom’s performance was enough to establish him as a formidable contender and a valuable asset to the team.

A Sliding Performance and Health Challenge in 2024

The 2024 season saw Rowbottom face more challenges, both on and off the track. His performance dipped, resulting in an 11th place finish in the standings. However, the year was marked by a more pressing issue: the need for long-postponed open heart surgery. Rowbottom, known for his mental fortitude, had been aware of the looming operation for the past 10 months. The journey into the unknown was daunting, but his strength and resolve carried him through. The surgery was a success, and Rowbottom has since been focusing on recovery and regaining his form. This setback, while significant, did not deter him from his passion for racing.

A Fresh Focus on Racing

As the driver who secured the prestigious Cataclean sponsorship for the BTCC, Rowbottom has often balanced his racing duties with commercial obligations. The pressure to perform both on and off the track has been immense. However, with his health issues now addressed, Rowbottom feels a renewed sense of freedom and positivity. “I don’t give a stuff who I’m compared against,” he candidly shared with Autosport. “I’m not glory-hunting and I’m not being precious. Winning the championship was my target when I was 16-years-old, and I don’t care if I do that and then never win a touring car race again. To win the BTCC is all I want to do.” His renewed focus on racing is evident, and the team is eager to see him excel.

A Strong Team Dynamics and Support

Rowbottom’s relationship with the NAPA Racing UK/Alliance team has been a key factor in his decision to extend his contract. Team owner Pete Osborne expressed his delight: “Following two seasons inside the NAPA Racing UK/Alliance family, we are delighted that Dan has re-signed for another two years. Dan has demonstrated that he is a team player who also has a burning desire to succeed in BTCC. We know he will hit the ground running in 2025 and beyond.” The team’s confidence in Rowbottom is matched by his own belief in their capabilities. With a strong crew and the continued support of veteran engineer Paul Ridgway, Rowbottom is poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming seasons.

Looking Ahead: 2025 and Beyond

The 2025 and 2026 seasons promise to be pivotal for Rowbottom and the NAPA Ford Focus squad. Quadruple champion Ash Sutton and 13-time race winner Dan Cammish, who have already been confirmed for these years, will continue to be strong competitors and teammates. Rowbottom’s presence, now unencumbered by health concerns, adds a new dynamic to the team. He is confident in his ability to deliver over one lap, a skill that has often set him apart. “Over one lap I know I’m quicker than anyone – last year we just never seemed to deliver it when it mattered in qualifying – and I know that if I can deliver it in qualifying, the rest of it will be easy,” he asserts. The fourth and final seat is expected to be filled by Pete Osborne’s son Sam, further solidifying the team’s lineup.

A Personal and Professional Triumph

Rowbottom’s journey is a testament to the human spirit’s ability to overcome adversity. From his early days rivaling future stars like James Calado and Jean-Eric Vergne during his karting days to the funding-induced sabbatical that nearly derailed his career, he has faced numerous obstacles. Yet, his passion for racing and his unwavering commitment to the sport have brought him back to the BTCC. With a strong team behind him and a clear mindset, Rowbottom is not just looking to compete; he is aiming to win. His story is a reminder that sometimes, the greatest victories are personal, and they pave the way for professional success.
