Sam Osborne’s Journey in the BTCC

Sam Osborne, a seasoned British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) driver, is gearing up for his seventh season in the series. The 32-year-old is no stranger to the rigors and challenges of the BTCC, having spent the past five years with the team now known as Alliance Racing. This team, which operates under the NAPA Racing banner, is renowned for its Ford Focus STs and has seen significant success under Pete Osborne’s leadership since the 2020-21 winter. For the upcoming season, Alliance Racing will field a formidable quartet of drivers, including four-time champion Ash Sutton, race winners Dan Cammish and Dan Rowbottom, and Sam Osborne himself. The team’s consistent performance and strategic decisions have positioned them as a strong contender in the highly competitive BTCC.

A Season of Growth

Osborne’s journey in the BTCC has been marked by steady growth and improvement. In 2024, a significant turning point came when the team brought in Rory Butcher, a multiple race winner and former outside title contender, to serve as a driver coach. This addition proved to be a game-changer for Osborne, who finished in the top 10 in eight of the last nine races of the season. Osborne’s enthusiasm is palpable; he expressed his desire for the 2024 season to continue, highlighting the momentum and confidence he gained. "To be honest, I didn’t want last season to end," he said. "We got things going and I was on a bit of a run. Midway through the year, we added Rory to my car crew, and along with Rich [Townsend, engineer] and my side of the team, it progressed us in all areas on and off track."

Preparing for 2025

The momentum from the 2024 season has carried into the preparation for the 2025 BTCC. Since the final round at Brands Hatch, the team has been working non-stop to ensure they are ready for a strong start. Osborne’s determination and the team’s hard work are evident in their approach. "Since Brands Hatch, it’s been non-stop with work and preparing for the 2025 season. We’re determined to start the season strong and put all the hard work to good use," Osborne emphasized. The team’s focus is not just on the overall championship but also on the Jack Sears Trophy, a sub-division for drivers who have not claimed more than one overall BTCC podium finish before the start of the season. Osborne, who remains eligible for this trophy, faces tough competition from new faces like Daryl DeLeon and Charles Rainford from West Surrey Racing, Ronan Pearson from Speedworks Motorsport, and Dexter Patterson and Max Hall from Un-Limited Motorsport.

The Role of Rory Butcher

Rory Butcher’s role as a driver coach has been instrumental in Osborne’s development. Butcher’s experience and insights have not only improved Osborne’s driving skills but also enhanced the team’s overall performance. Alliance motorsport director Malcolm Swetnam, a veteran of the tin-top racing scene, acknowledged the impact of Butcher’s coaching. "Sam has forged a great relationship with Rich, and the addition of Rory as driver coach mid-season in 2024 really brought out the best in him," Swetnam said. The chemistry between Osborne, Butcher, and the engineering team has created a synergistic environment that is crucial for success in the competitive world of touring car racing.

The Jack Sears Trophy Challenge

The Jack Sears Trophy is a significant sub-division within the BTCC, designed to provide a platform for less experienced drivers to showcase their talents. Osborne’s eligibility for this trophy adds an extra layer of motivation to his 2025 campaign. However, the competition is fierce, with several talented drivers vying for the same accolade. WSR’s Daryl DeLeon and Charles Rainford, Speedworks’ Ronan Pearson, and Un-Limited Motorsport’s Dexter Patterson and Max Hall are all formidable opponents. Despite this, Osborne’s recent form and the support of his team give him a strong foundation to build upon. "His performance in the latter half of 2024 gives the team high hopes for 2025 with particular focus on the Jack Sears Trophy," Swetnam added.

Looking Ahead

As the 2025 BTCC season approaches, the team’s focus is clear: to build on the successes of the previous year and achieve even greater results. Sam Osborne’s journey from a promising driver to a consistent top-10 finisher under the guidance of Rory Butcher and the support of his team highlights the importance of collaboration and continuous improvement in motorsport. With the Jack Sears Trophy within reach and a strong team behind him, Osborne is poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming season. The hard work and dedication of the entire Alliance Racing team are set to pay off, as they aim to start 2025 on a high note and continue their upward trajectory in the BTCC.
