Peter Uihlein’s Roller-Coaster Round Sets the Stage for a Tight Finish
Peter Uihlein captured a share of the lead at LIV Golf Hong Kong on Saturday with an impressive 6-under 64. The RangeGoats GC star’s round was a mix of highs and lows, featuring one eagle and eight birdies, but also four bogeys. Despite the ups and downs, Uihlein’s 11-under total kept the competition tight. He heads into Sunday’s final round tied with Paul Casey of Crushers GC and Sergio Garcia of Fireballs GC, all three players leading by three shots over their nearest challengers. "I just watched the Peter Uihlein show today," said Casey, who shot a 66 on Saturday and remains bogey-free this week. "It was impressive stuff. I’m very happy that I’m sitting here tied for the lead. … If Pete had not made a bogey today, he’d be about five shots ahead because of his firepower." Uihlein, however, took the rough patches in stride. "I kind of just view it as entertainment," he said. "Obviously, I don’t like making bogeys, but I guess the adversity that kind of comes with it. I enjoy that. I enjoy the moment."
Mito Pereira’s Hole-in-One and Torque GC’s Strong Performance
Torque GC’s Mito Pereira added a thrilling moment to the tournament on Saturday, recording the 10th hole-in-one in LIV Golf history at the 149-yard second hole. Pereira’s 64 helped his team take the top spot on the leaderboard at 25 under, two strokes ahead of Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII and Phil Mickelson’s HyFlyers GC. Torque and Legion XIII have been consistent winners in the LIV Golf circuit, but the HyFlyers are yet to secure a team victory. Mickelson, who is tied for fourth with Pereira and Sebastián Muñoz, has a chance to change that on Sunday. The last time Mickelson won a tournament, he made history at the 2021 PGA Championship, becoming the oldest golfer to win a men’s major at age 51. While he would love an individual title, he is particularly eager for a team win. "The experience of sharing it with teammates … I think that would probably mean a little more, which is very unusual to say in a game that’s such an individual sport," Mickelson said.
Uihlein, Casey, and Garcia: A Trio of Talents Seeking a First Individual LIV Golf Title
Peter Uihlein, Paul Casey, and Sergio Garcia are each vying for their first individual LIV Golf title. Uihlein, a two-time winner on The International Series, has come close to winning individually on multiple occasions, finishing as a runner-up four times. "Getting that first win would be awesome," he said. "I think that’s kind of the goal at the start of every year is to get a win. To get a team win would be nice as well, but an individual win would be fantastic." Casey, a seasoned veteran with 21 titles in 13 different countries, narrowly missed out on victory last year at LIV Golf Hong Kong when he reached a three-man playoff. "Every win is special, from the most recent to the very first that I ever had," he said. "Hopefully, I can answer that again tomorrow." Sergio Garcia, whose Fireballs won the most recent LIV Golf tournament in Adelaide, matched Uihlein’s 64 on Saturday but did so without dropping a single shot. "It’s an ideal kind of golf course," Garcia said of Hong Kong Golf Club. "It’s an old-style, traditional kind of style, which I love. Very happy to be here and playing and doing well. We’ll give it another shot tomorrow."
Team Scores: Torque GC Leads the Pack
LIV Golf’s new scoring format this season involves all four scores counting in every round for the team competition. After Saturday’s second round, Torque GC leads the pack at 25 under, thanks to Mito Pereira’s 64, Sebastián Muñoz’s 67, Joaquin Niemann’s 68, and Carlos Ortiz’s 68. Legion XIII and HyFlyers GC are tied for second at 23 under, with Legion XIII’s Patrick Surratt shooting a 62, Jon Rahm a 64, Ben McKibbin a 66, and Tyrrell Hatton a 67. HyFlyers GC’s strong performance was led by J.J. Henry’s 64, Mickelson’s 65, Cameron Tringale’s 65, and Dmitry Gorbikov’s 69. Fireballs GC is in fourth place at 22 under, followed by Crushers GC at 20 under, Stinger GC at 19 under, RangeGoats GC at 18 under, Ripper GC at 16 under, and Smash GC at 12 under. The competition is heating up, and each team is poised for a final-round showdown.
The Final Round: High Stakes and High Expectations
Sunday’s final round promises to be a thrilling conclusion to the LIV Golf Hong Kong tournament. With the leaderboard tightly packed, every shot could make or break a player’s or team’s chances of victory. Peter Uihlein, Paul Casey, and Sergio Garcia are in prime position for an individual title, but they will have to navigate the challenges of Hong Kong Golf Club and the pressure of a large, eager audience. For Torque GC, Legion XIII, and HyFlyers GC, a team victory is within reach, and the camaraderie and support of their teammates could be the key to success. As the players take the final steps onto the green, the stakes are high, and the excitement is palpable. Who will rise to the occasion and claim the top spot? The world of golf is watching, and the drama is just beginning.
