The Scouting Combine: A Prelude to Free Agency and the NFL Draft

The NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis is a critical event, not just for the prospects eyeing the draft but also for the veterans gearing up for free agency. After a week of intense evaluations, interviews, and drills, the landscape for the upcoming NFL season is starting to take shape. From quarterbacks to running backs and safeties, here’s a closer look at what to expect in the coming weeks.

Who’s QB3?

No position garners as much attention during Combine week as quarterback. This year, Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward are firmly established as the top two prospects, though opinions vary on their exact order. However, the real intrigue lies beyond these two, with several quarterbacks making significant impressions.

Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart has emerged as a strong contender for the third spot. His performance at the Senior Bowl in Mobile was impressive, and he continued to build on that momentum in Indianapolis. Teams are drawn to his toughness, strong arm, and mobility. One college scouting director remarked, "He actually reminds me a bit of Bo Nix last year. We’ve seen a lot of improvement; he’s not the same player we saw three years ago at USC." Dart’s board work and interviews were particularly crucial, and a few teams feel he has a strong case as a first-round pick.

Another quarterback to watch is Louisville’s Tyler Shough. Standing at 6-5 and weighing 224 pounds, Shough possesses a powerful arm and has drawn favorable reviews despite his history of injuries. "He threw as well as anyone," a personnel director noted. "It’s early, but he may have played himself into QB3. The ball really spins, and his 4.64 in the 40 was unexpected." Shough’s performance has been a pleasant surprise, and he could be a valuable addition to any team looking for a strong, accurate passer.

Are Running Backs Back?

The running back class this year is both deep and talented, with several prospects making a strong case for early-round selections. Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty, known for his affable and confident demeanor, wowed in interviews, but he was far from the only standout.

North Carolina’s Omarion Hampton emerged as a particularly strong candidate for a first-round pick. His combination of size (5-11 1/2, 221 pounds) and speed (4.46 in the 40) makes him a natural runner, smooth and decisive. A personnel director commented, "I don’t see how he doesn’t go Round 1. He’s such a natural runner: smooth, decisive, and then you add the explosiveness. If he ran in the 4.4’s, I thought he would go Day 1. Guess what, he did." Hampton’s performance has solidified his position as a formidable prospect.

Other notable running backs include Iowa’s Kaleb Johnson, a competitive slasher who single-handedly carried the Hawkeyes’ offense; SMU’s Brashard Smith, known for his elite quickness and hands; Tennessee’s Dylan Sampson, a highly productive workhorse with big-play potential; and Ohio State’s TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins, both of whom are expected to excel in the pros.

Safety Nests

Safety is another position where the Combine has revealed a wealth of talent. Teams are particularly eager to pursue this year’s free agent class, which is considered one of the best in recent years. Eight names have consistently come up in discussions:

  • Camryn Bynum (Vikings)
  • Jevon Holland (Dolphins)
  • Tre’von Moehrig (Raiders)
  • Jeremy Chinn (Commanders)
  • Xavier Woods (Panthers)
  • Julian Blackmon (Colts)
  • Andre Cisco (Jaguars)
  • Justin Reid (Chiefs)

A current executive noted, "The safety draft has some good talent, but the free agency class is gonna be the key for a lot of teams. Whether that means paying a guy in the $7-10 million range, or moving into the mid-teens, I think we all expect that position to see a lot of movement, and fast movement, too. You’d rather overpay a little to get your guy than have to wait and try and get lucky in the draft."

Around the Corner: The Cornerback Market

The free-agent cornerback market is particularly robust this year, with several top-tier players available. Detroit’s Carlton Davis and the Jets’ D.J. Reed are among the most sought-after, with both receiving significant interest and potentially commanding annual wages in the high teens. These players are known for their aggressive and effective style, unafraid to press and adept at supporting the run defense.

Byron Murphy, who had a standout year with the Vikings, is also primed for a significant payday. "I know they wanted to bring him back, but you gotta open up the checkbooks for Murphy," a scout commented. "He’s earned it, but they’ve got a lot of other s— going on." Similarly, Paulson Adebo, a playmaking machine with 10 interceptions and 43 pass deflections in four years with the Saints, is expected to shape the market with his performance.

Charvarius Ward, who played for the 49ers, and Rasul Douglas, currently with the Bills, are also likely to do well, along with Brandin Echols, who quietly had a strong campaign with the Jets. Meanwhile, two-time All-Pro Jaire Alexander is available via trade, though most executives believe the Packers will ultimately release him.

The Human Element

Beyond the numbers and statistics, the Combine is a human event. It’s a week where prospects and evaluators form connections, and first impressions can make or break a player’s prospects. For Jaxson Dart and Tyler Shough, their performances and interviews have opened doors to first-round consideration. For running backs like Omarion Hampton, their natural talent and compelling personalities have made them standouts. In the free agency market, the human element is just as crucial, as teams weigh not just a player’s skills but their character and fit within the organization.

Looking Ahead

The Combine has set the stage for the upcoming NFL season, providing a clearer picture of the talent pool and the strategies teams will employ in free agency and the draft. From the quarterbacks vying for the top spots to the running backs and safeties making waves, the next few weeks will be pivotal. For fans and analysts alike, the excitement is palpable, and the Scouting Combine has only heightened the anticipation. As the NFL landscape continues to evolve, the Combine serves as a essential checkpoint on the path to the new season.
