Alex Palou: A Champion’s Journey

Alex Palou, the two-time defending IndyCar Series champion, is approaching the 2025 season with a unique blend of confidence and determination. After clinching his third championship in four years, Palou reflects on his journey with Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR), a team he joined amidst a whirlwind of controversy and legal battles. Despite the initial drama, Palou has found a home at CGR, and his latest title victory is a testament to the team’s resilience and his own unwavering focus. In a candid interview with FOX Sports, Palou opened up about his 2024 championship season and his aspirations for the upcoming year.

Characterizing the 2024 Season

Reflecting on the 2024 season, Palou describes it as a challenging yet fulfilling year. "Every season is different," he notes, "and 2023 was a magical year with lots of wins and podiums. In 2024, we only managed two wins, but they were hard to come by. It was more about consistency, and we had a bunch of top-5 finishes." He acknowledges the ups and downs of the season, with notable setbacks at races like Iowa and Detroit, but emphasizes that the overall performance was a collective effort. "It’s been a complete year," Palou says, "and my favorite one so far. My daughter was born in December 2023, and being able to race and win the championship while being a new father was incredibly special."

Racing Performance and Personal Growth

While some might argue that luck played a role in his 2023 success, Palou is quick to point out that achieving 10 podiums wasn’t a matter of chance. "Racing is hard, and you have magical years. Last year, we had the advantage, but this year, we won without that magical touch. It’s a testament to the team’s hard work and my own ability to adapt and perform under different circumstances." Palou’s ability to maximize performance in some races while facing challenges in others showcases his growth as a driver. "Some races, we got it right, and others, we didn’t. But I’m happy we could win the championship without having everything fall into place."

Oval Track Aspirations

One of the most pressing goals for Palou in 2025 is to secure his first win on an oval track. "It’s crazy that we haven’t won on an oval yet," he admits. "We’ve been close, finishing second or third multiple times, but it’s just so difficult. At Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), you have 200 laps, 500 miles, and five to six pit stops. Everything needs to align perfectly to win such a long and demanding race." Palou is determined to work harder with his team to finally break this barrier. "We’re going to push even more this year. Winning at IMS is a double No. 1 on my list. It would be a dream come true."

The Oval Track Debate

When it comes to the ongoing debate about the number of oval tracks in the IndyCar series, Palou takes a balanced approach. "I think it depends on the tracks. If we add new and diverse oval tracks, I’m all for it. I know I’ve struggled a bit with ovals, but I believe I’ll get it right eventually." However, he is not a fan of doubleheaders on ovals. "It’s a lot of work for everyone, especially the crew. For the fans, it can become repetitive. But I’m excited for new races. I love to race, and wherever we go, I’ll be happy." Palou’s enthusiasm for racing is evident, and he is eager to see the series continue to evolve and expand.

Managing Off-Track Drama

Off the track, Palou has faced significant challenges, including legal battles and intense media scrutiny. "2022 was really hard, and 2023 had its fair share of issues," he says. "But at the end of the day, my job is to race. When I put on my suit and helmet, my focus shifts entirely to the track. The drama and pressure are part of the sport, and I created some of it myself. But I’m living my dream, and I couldn’t complain. That’s what helped me stay focused." Palou’s ability to compartmentalize and focus on his racing career, despite the external noise, is a remarkable trait that has contributed to his success.

Looking Forward to 2025

As CGR prepares to field three cars in 2025, down from five in 2024, Palou remains optimistic. "The team can easily handle more cars, so going from five to three won’t be a big deal. It might even help us focus more on each car and driver." He believes that the reduction in cars will not significantly impact the team’s performance, as CGR has always been well-equipped with mechanics and engineering resources. "We’re excited about the future and trying to maximize what we have with three cars. We’ll still have a strong competitive edge, and I’m confident we can continue to challenge for championships." Palou’s positive outlook and determination make him a formidable force in the IndyCar Series, ready to tackle the challenges of 2025 and beyond.
