Conway, S.C. – Coastal Carolina baseball was ranked as No. 20 overall in D1Baseball’s 2019 Top 100 College Baseball Programs Countdown, it was announced today.
The D1Baseball countdown is a look at the best 100 college baseball programs across the nation with the ultimate goal to identify the programs in the best shape right now, with an eye toward the next five to 10 years based on the tradition of consistent winning in the last decade, and especially in the last five years.
The bi-annual countdown had the Chanticleers ranked No. 17 in 2016, which was just one year removed from winning the 2016 NCAA College World Series National Championship, and No. 33 in the inaugural countdown in 2015.
Here is what D1Baseball had to say about the Chanticleers:
20. Coastal Carolina
2017 Rank: 17. If you want the model as an aspiring mid-major, just take a look at Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers are hardly a “mid-major” these days. Call them a power mid-major as you wish, but there was a point when the Chants definitely still had something to prove. Those days are long gone. The Chants have formed into one of college baseball’s most impressive stories and most consistent programs.
Coastal made a massive statement back in 2016 with a national title and 55 wins. CCU missed the postseason the next year despite having more than 35 wins, while they returned to the NCAA tournament the past two seasons, hosting in 2018 with a 43-19 record and making the tourney this past season with a 36-26 overall mark.
There’s so much to like about this program. Gary Gilmore will go down as one of the best coaches in our sport’s history, thanks to his contributions in Conway. CCU now has a premier facility and is in a solid baseball conference in the Sun Belt. There’s really nothing holding the Chants back at this point, which should lead to even more sustained success moving forward.
