The Rise and Challenges of a Tennis Phenom

When 18-year-old Emma Raducanu emerged as the US Open champion in September 2021, it marked an unprecedented and fairy-tale victory that catapulted her into the global spotlight. Overnight, she became not just a tennis sensation but also a marketing marvel, drawing the attention of some of the world’s most prestigious brands. Raducanu’s triumph transformed her into a multimillionaire, and she quickly signed sponsorship deals with major companies such as British Airways, Dior, HSBC, Porsche, Tiffany & Co, and Vodafone. These brands were keen to capitalize on her youthful charisma and immense talent, leading to a whirlwind of off-court commitments.

The Pressure of Balancing Tennis and Commercial Success

While the financial windfall and global recognition were undeniably beneficial, the avalanche of commercial activities began to take a significant toll on Raducanu’s tennis career. The demands of media appearances, photo shoots, and promotional events began to disrupt her training schedule and physical conditioning. Raducanu, now 22, reflects on this period with a mix of gratitude and hindsight. She explains, "I’m obviously very grateful and fortunate to have had certain experiences and opportunities, but I wasn’t prepared for it. In my head, it was like: ‘Okay, I wake up, I play tennis, I go to the gym, I go home, and I don’t have anything else to do.’ Instead, the next few years were filled with constant communication about off-court activities, which took a lot out of me."

Learning to Manage Expectations

Initially, Raducanu felt a strong sense of obligation to her sponsors and partners, often fitting additional commitments into her already packed schedule. She would wake up early to train, then squeeze in marketing activities in the afternoon, always striving to give her best on and off the court. Raducanu admits, "Initially, I felt really bad for letting people down. I’d always want to do extra for whatever partner or magazine or whatever I’m shooting for. I would always want to do extra if they wanted to do another half day. I would do it and fit it in around my schedule." However, over time, she has learned to be more assertive and structured in her time management. "Now, I’m a lot more structured. I’ll be like: ‘Okay, I have this time where one hour we will talk about business, and now I’m going to train for the rest of the week.’ I think I’ve learned how to say no a bit more."

A Fresh Start for the 2025 Season

Determined to make a strong comeback, Raducanu is preparing to start the 2025 season with renewed focus and energy. This Friday, she will fly to New Zealand with her new fitness trainer, Yutaka Nakamura, to begin her preparation. While she will spend Christmas Day on an Auckland beach, a stark contrast to the wintry cold of London, Raducanu sees this as part of her life as a top-end tennis player. She shares, "My best friend lives in Auckland. The last two years I’ve been with her and her family, and we go up north an hour. She has a little beach hut. It’s like a hot Christmas with a barbecue on the beach. It’s different for someone who grew up in London, but I’m just gonna make peace with it for the next 10 or 15 years and then I’ll come back and have a cold Christmas."

Overcoming Setbacks and Staying Resilient

Raducanu has faced some recent setbacks, including the loss of her beloved Porsche, a £125,000 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet, which was taken back by the luxury car manufacturers. Additionally, she has been warned that her £9 million worth of sponsorship deals are at risk unless she starts winning again. Despite these challenges, Raducanu remains resilient and focused on her tennis. She says, "If it’s a last-minute thing, I’m always going to try and do my best to give extra to the brands I’m working with. But also, I need to put myself first a little bit more." Raducanu is ranked 57th in the world and is determined to work hard and make a strong return to form.

A Bright Future Ahead

Emma Raducanu’s journey from a surprising US Open champion to a seasoned professional has been marked by both triumph and challenge. As she prepares for the 2025 season, she is more structured and assertive in managing her commitments, ensuring that her primary focus remains on her tennis. With a supportive team and a clear vision, Raducanu is poised to make a significant impact on the tennis world once again. Her story is a testament to the complexities of balancing athletic success with commercial demands and the importance of resilience in the face of adversity.
