Dak Prescott’s Pivotal Role

The Dallas Cowboys have secured their cornerstone with quarterback Dak Prescott, who has inked a four-year contract, making him the highest-paid player at his position in the NFL. Prescott’s return from a significant hamstring injury that required season-ending surgery only emphasizes the team’s commitment to him. However, the Cowboys are not resting on their laurels. Executive Vice President and CEO Stephen Jones has made it clear that the team is looking to bolster their quarterback depth in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Evaluating the Depth Chart

In Prescott’s absence, Cooper Rush and Trey Lance stepped up to fill the void. Rush, who started eight games, and Lance, who took the reins in the Week 18 finale, both demonstrated their potential. However, the Cowboys may find themselves in a difficult position as both players are set to hit free agency. While Rush has been a reliable option, Jones acknowledges that the team’s financial constraints, heavily influenced by Prescott’s contract, may limit their ability to retain him. "You know how much we think of Cooper, but we just don’t know what he’s going to cost," Jones said. "When we’re paying Dak what we’re paying him, unfortunately we do have to go cheap there."

The Quest for a Backup

Jones has made it clear that the Cowboys are prepared to find a replacement for Lance, who was acquired via a fourth-round pick. "That’s why we gave a [fourth-round pick] for Trey. It seems like all the quarterbacks, even guys we have in the fourth round, go in the first. They always go so much higher than what you think," he explained. The team’s strategy is to draft and develop a quarterback who can step in when needed, ensuring a smooth transition and depth at the position.

Drafting for the Future

The Cowboys have the 12th overall pick in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, but they are unlikely to use it on a quarterback. According to Yahoo Sports’ NFL mock draft, analysts Nate Tice and Charles McDonald project Dallas selecting Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty with their top pick. However, the Cowboys have several more selections throughout the draft, including picks in the second, third, fifth, sixth, and seventh rounds. The team is also expected to receive three additional fifth-round compensatory picks, as well as a sixth-rounder, as a result of losing key players in free agency.

Potential Quarterback Prospects

Despite the likelihood of not drafting a quarterback in the first round, the Cowboys could still find a gem in the later rounds. Names like Alabama’s Jalen Milroe, Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel, Texas’ Quinn Ewers, and Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart are generating buzz. Each of these prospects brings unique skills and potential, and their availability will depend on how the draft unfolds. According to new head coach Brian Schottenheimer and QB coach Steve Shimko, the team is keen on identifying a quarterback they can groom for the future. "We feel strongly about adding a young quarterback who can learn and develop under Dak," Schottenheimer said.

The Road Ahead

As the Cowboys prepare for the 2025 NFL Draft, the focus is on building a team that is both competitive and sustainable. While Dak Prescott’s presence provides stability and leadership, the need for a solid backup is undeniable. The team’s strategy of drafting and developing a quarterback in the later rounds aligns with their commitment to financial prudence and long-term success. Whether it’s a college star like Jalen Milroe or a future standout yet to be identified, the Cowboys are poised to make a move that will fortify their quarterback depth and ensure their continued success on the field.
