Two Seasons of Promise and Heartache

The Delhi Capitals (DC) have had a remarkable run in the last two Women’s Premier League (WPL) seasons, finishing atop the table both times. However, the team’s journey to the top came with a bittersweet twist: While they secured the top spots, they fell short in the finals, losing to Mumbai Indians in 2023 and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2024. Despite these setbacks, captain Meg Lanning remains optimistic and believes that a continuation of their stellar performance, coupled with a few strategic tweaks, will lead them to the coveted title in 2025. "We’ve had two good seasons without being able to finish it off the way we would have liked," Lanning remarked. "The key for us is maintaining what we’ve been doing well. We’ve been playing some really good cricket and doing a lot of things right. We’re just evolving and making a few little changes that we think will make a big difference and hopefully allow us to take that next step."

The Balance of Continuity and Evolution

Lanning’s approach to the upcoming season is rooted in a balance of continuity and evolution. She emphasized that significant overhauls are not necessary, as the team has already established a strong foundation. "It’s not a big shift from us," she noted. "We’ve added some new players, and the ones who have been here have also improved and gotten better. We feel like we’re in a really good spot. We don’t need to change too much. Just a few small things to push us over the line." Lanning’s confidence stems from the team’s consistent performance and the chemistry they have built, which she believes can be honed to perfection with minor adjustments.

Embracing the Role of a Mentor

Following her retirement from international cricket in 2023, Lanning has focused on playing in franchise leagues and domestic cricket. This shift has given her the opportunity to spend more time at home, which she thoroughly enjoys. However, the highlight for her has been the chance to mentor younger players. "Being around young players in these tournaments and giving them advice has been incredibly gratifying," Lanning shared. "Playing these leagues before a tournament like the WPL helps me get into the rhythm. I love the challenge of passing on the knowledge I’ve accumulated over the years, both on and off the field. Managing pressure and staying focused are crucial, and I try to help the younger players navigate these aspects."

Preparing for the Challenge Ahead

Lanning enters the 2025 WPL season not only as the tournament’s highest-ever run-getter, with 676 runs across two seasons, but also on the back of impressive performances in the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL), Australia’s domestic 50-over competition. She averaged 51.14 in eight games, demonstrating her form and readiness. "Playing matches is crucial; there’s nothing quite like being out in the middle and finding your rhythm," she said. "I feel like I’m in a good spot with my game. India has always been a special place for me, where I’ve had some success in the past. The couple of days I’ve been here have been great for getting used to the conditions again and clarifying my plans."

A Dynamic Opening Partnership

One of the standout features of DC’s recent successes has been the opening partnership between Lanning and Shafali Verma. Lanning’s steady and reliable batting has complemented Shafali’s aggressive and entertaining style, resulting in several record-breaking stands. They have already put up three 100-plus partnerships in the WPL, including the highest-ever stand of 162 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2023. Lanning expressed her enthusiasm about continuing this partnership and building on their past achievements. "I love batting with Shafali. She puts on a fantastic show, and I have the best seat in the house from the other end," Lanning said. "In the practice game, she did the same thing a few days ago. She looks in excellent form, enjoying herself, and having fun, which is crucial. Her freedom and expression play a vital role for our team."

Shafali’s Return and Impact

Shafali Verma has been a force to reckon with in recent domestic cricket. After being dropped from the Indian national team in November last year, she returned to form, finishing as the top run-getter in the Senior Women’s One Day Trophy and the One Day Challenger Trophy. Lanning praised Shafali’s performance and the positive energy she brings to the team. "Shafali is in great touch, and her return to form in domestic cricket is a huge boost for us," Lanning commented. "Her ability to strike the ball and the fun she has while playing are infectious. We get along really well, and I’m confident that our partnership will continue to flourish this season. The key is to stay consistent and build from our previous successes."

Lanning’s leadership and the dynamic duo’s partnership are set to be pivotal as the Delhi Capitals aim to turn their promise into triumph in the 2025 WPL. The team’s blend of experience, young talent, and a positive mindset could be the recipe for finally clinching the title.
