Chargers GM Joe Hortiz Optimistic About Free Agency and Team Growth

Los Angeles Chargers General Manager Joe Hortiz addressed the media at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, showcasing his ambition and optimism as the team prepares for a pivotal offseason. The sunny weather, vibrant city, and laid-back lifestyle in Los Angeles have long been staples in the team’s pitch to free agents. Hortiz believes that with the recent revitalization of the front office and the state-of-the-art practice facility, these elements will combine to make the Chargers an increasingly attractive destination for top NFL talent. "We’ll become a destination, I really believe that," Hortiz confidently stated, emphasizing the high quality of life and the dynamic working environment in Los Angeles.

Building a Winning Culture

The Chargers are making significant strides in their rebuild under the leadership of Hortiz and Coach Jim Harbaugh. After a successful 2022 season where they posted an 11-6 record and advanced to the wild-card round, the team is well-positioned to make a big impact in free agency. The Chargers currently boast the sixth-most salary cap space in the NFL, giving them the financial flexibility to pursue high-caliber players. However, Hortiz is determined to preserve the core of a roster that has shown promise. The team is currently in talks with 26 players who are set to hit free agency, including edge rusher Khalil Mack, who is an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career. Mack, a three-time All-Pro, has expressed a desire to win a playoff game before retiring, and the Chargers’ recent success provides a compelling narrative for potential signings.

The Draft and Free Agency Balance

Hortiz’s team-building philosophy remains rooted in the draft, a strategy that he has honed over his years as a longtime scout in the Baltimore Ravens’ front office. "You want to be able to draft the best player available and help the team, because the draft is a four- or five-year solution when you pick a player. Free agency is not always that," he explained. While the draft offers long-term stability and growth, free agency can provide immediate impact and depth. The Chargers are well-aware of this balance, and they are actively evaluating players for the April draft. With the 22nd overall pick, the team is eyeing key positions such as running back, interior offensive and defensive lines, and receiver.

Addressing Line Needs

Despite drafting offensive tackle Joe Alt with the No. 5 pick last year, the Chargers’ offensive line remains a focal point. The line’s performance was a mixed bag, with the team giving up four sacks and nine quarterback hits in their wild-card loss to the Houston Texans. While the tackles are relatively settled with Rashawn Slater and Alt, the interior offensive line could see significant changes. Center Bradley Bozeman, who started all 18 games last year, is a free agent. Hortiz is keeping an open mind, noting that the draft is deep in offensive linemen, with eight centers among the 50 participants at the combine. However, the team’s scouts are instructed to consider college players who can transition to different positions. Left guard Zion Johnson, who also started every game last year, has been working at center and shows promise as a versatile option.

Joey Bosa’s Cap Conundrum

One of the biggest challenges facing the Chargers this offseason is the cap hit of edge rusher Joey Bosa. At $36.47 million, Bosa’s salary is the highest for an edge rusher in the NFL. Hortiz maintained that it is possible to bring Bosa back under his current cap number, though he was tight-lipped about ongoing negotiations. "I know he wants to retire a Charger, he’s made that statement," Hortiz said. "I’d love for him to retire a Charger." Bosa, the team’s longest-tenured player, took a pay cut to return last year, and similar conversations could be on the horizon to ensure his continued presence. The ability to retain Bosa will be crucial for the Chargers’ defensive strength and the morale of the locker room.

Looking Ahead to a Bright Future

The Chargers are committed to continuing their upward trajectory, and the optimism surrounding the team extends beyond the front office. The city of Los Angeles, known for its allure and high quality of life, will play a significant role in attracting free agents. Hortiz and Harbaugh’s vision of a competitive and united team, backed by recent on-field success, provides a strong foundation for future growth. As the team prepares for the next phase of their rebuild, the focus remains on finding the right blend of draft picks and free agents to fortify their roster. With a steady hand at the helm and the promise of a bright future, the Chargers are poised to make significant strides in the coming season.
